Each show’s schedule is different so shop around, but remember to take advantage of these offers you must book by 31 January.

This is particularly true of shows which haven’t opened yet. Given these shows are new and may be unfamiliar to you, we thought we’d take a closer look at shows in the New Year Sale which are opening in the coming months…

January

Gerry & Sewell opens on 13 January. This heart-warming comedy about friendships and underdogs follows two Newcastle United fans desperate to get a season ticket. After a sell-out run in the North East, the play transfers to the West End for only two weeks.

Chichester Festival Theatre has a strong record of West End transfers – think Half A Sixpence, Quiz, revivals of Gypsy and Caroline, Or Change – and it shows no signs of slowing down.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry is a new musical based on Rachel Joyce’s profound and funny novel, with music by indie musician Passenger. It had rave reviews in Chichester last summer and transfers with original cast members Mark Addy and Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell, with previews from 29 January and New Year Sale prices in February, too.

Theatre company Frantic Assembly celebrate their 30th anniversary with a new play, Lost Atoms, written by Anna Jordan who wrote episodes of Succession and One Day. The play charts the life-changing relationship of Jess and Robbie and focusses on how differing memories can change our stories. It runs at the Lyric Hammersmith from 30 January – 28 February, taking part in the New Year Sale for February performances.

February

For one night only, X Factor contestant turned West End star Lucie Jones is Live At The London Palladium. Blending her live gig roots with the drama of her stage career, including regular performances in Les Miserables and the leading role in Waitress, this will be a unique concert that showcases her incredible vocal talent. Expect surprise appearances and unique collaborations. 16 February only.

Evening All Afternoon is a brand new play by American playwright Anna Ziegler, who had a hit on the West End with Photograph 51, starring Nicole Kidman. This play explores the relationship between a stepmother and stepdaughter, confronting the human dilemma about facing loss and opening up to new connections. The play runs from 19 February – 11 April at the Donmar Warehouse, an intimate and compelling space with a storied history.

March

Sibling duo Nina and Moses Raine (Consent and Donkey Heart, respectively) team up for a new translation of Summer Folk, by Russian dramatist Maxim Gorky. 1905 was a hot, beautiful summer in Russia, but while the elite wine and dine, a storm is on the horizon. The story is fitting for the Raines, whose great uncle was Boris Pasternak, author of Doctor Zhivago. Summer Folk runs from 12 March – 29 April at the National Theatre.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe will lead the cast of Kinky Boots

While you can find opera and ballet at the London Coliseum for much of the year, London’s largest theatre stages a big musical each summer. This March will see the first West End revival of Kinky Boots.

The show is based on the British film and true story of a Northampton shoe factory that hits hard times, then takes a chance on becoming a specialist in shoewear for drag artists. With music and lyrics by pop star Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles), this production will be led by Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe in the role of Lola.  It runs from 17 March – 11 July with New Year Sale offers on most April, May and June performances.

Speaking passionately about the 2-hour concert, Rhiannon says “after the past 14 months, to go along to the theatre and sing and dance to some of the best songs ever written” is “something we all need right now”. We couldn’t agree more!

The Bush Theatre’s Overflow will be streamed online

Following ecstatic reviews in its opening week, the Bush Theatre’s run of Travis Alabanza’s monologue Overflow, performed by transgender actress Reece Lyons and directed by Debbie Hannan, was curtailed when London entered tier three.  Determined not to disappoint audiences unable to travel, the Bush Theatre has recorded the show on-stage for international broadcast online at  2pm and 8pm on 18 January – 23 January. There will be a captioned performance on 20 January at 8 pm and an audio described performance at 2pm on 20 January.

Cornered into a flooding toilet cubicle and determined not to be rescued again, Rosie distracts herself with memories of bathroom encounters, drunken heart-to-hearts by dirty sinks, friendships forged in front of crowded mirrors, and hiding from trouble.

Writer Travis Alabanza said, “I feel so excited to have my next show ‘Overflow’ at a theatre like the Bush, with a director as incredible as Debbie and alead as talented as Reece Lyons. The last five years have seen such a horrifying increase in how this country treats trans people, so it feels deeply important to create work and art that allows us to take up space on main stages, and tell our own stories.

“With so much of the media, political landscape, and online sphere dominated by people speaking for us, art and performance is a place for us to take back the mic and speak on our terms – with all the different shades and textures that comes with. I am so excited for ‘Overflow’ to be part of the ever-growing and vibrant trans theatrical canon.”

You can book tickets on the Bush Theatre’s website here.

But on a Christmas Eve filled with memorable characters, spectacular songs, ghostly apparitions and journeys to the past, present and future, Scrooge acknowledges his mistakes and discovers the joy of redemption. With a sparkling Broadway score played by the London Musical Theatre Orchestra, an all-star cast and a touch of festive magic, A Christmas Carol at the Dominion is the must-see West End production this December.

The creative team is led by director Shaun Kerrison, who has helmed several previous concert productions for LMTO (A Christmas Carol, Mack and Mabel, Candide) as well as BBC Proms My Fair Lady and Kiss Me, Kate, with Freddie Tapner (founder of LMTO) as Musical Director. A Christmas Carol is produced by Freddie Tapner for the London Musical Theatre Orchestra and Gary England. LMTO is the world’s only professional orchestra dedicated solely to performing works of musical theatre.

Tell Us In 10: Lucie Jones https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/tell-us-in-10-lucie-jones/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 10:46:39 +0000 http://&p=111419156 In our profile series, Tell Us In 10, we ask cast members and creatives of top London shows to tell us all about themselves in just 10 questions. From how their castmates would describe them and alternative careers, to their Theatreland idols, we want to know it all!

Answering our questions this week is Lucie Jones. She’s playing the lead role of Jenna in Waitress.

Before you delve into her interview, why not check out this delicious performance at this year’s West End LIVE from the cast of Waitress.

1. My route into theatre was…

I always wanted to work in theatre – I auditioned for many musical theatre courses at the age of 18 but didn’t have any luck. I went to audition for the X Factor the same year and had a chance to perform on the live shows so I took it and ran with it. Meeting my agent shortly after the show finished, we started to work together and I haven’t looked back!

2. My West End idol is…

There are so many people I look up to, I couldn’t choose one. But they include performers (male and female), composers, directors, security/ front of house/ crew…. it takes a village!

3. My colleagues would describe me as…

I would hope a good leader and committed to the show! But I’m sure a little off the wall and silly.

4. My favourite show present or past (that isn’t one I star in) is…

THIS QUESTION ALWAYS STOPS ME! How to choose? The Cursed Child, Hamilton, City of Angels at The Donmar, Dear Evan Hansen, The Ferryman, The Inheritance… I can’t choose. Don’t make me. I could be here all day. I’m a fan at heart!

5. The career moment I’m most proud of is…

I’ve been incredibly lucky to have a varied and exciting career. I’ll never forget my first bow as Elle Woods at Curve in Leicester. That felt like a big achievement – my first leading lady moment under the watchful eye of Nikolai Foster (hands down the most incredible, patient and giving man I have ever worked with). However, every night in Waitress gives me everything I could have ever dreamed of from being on stage. Telling that story every day is intensely wonderful.

6. The hardest part about my role is…

Lucie Jones in Waitress (Photo: Johan Persson)

It’s emotionally heavy! I sometimes get home feeling like I’ve run a marathon because of the adrenaline rush and how that affects my mind, body and heart. It’s worth every year though. I couldn’t love it more.

7. If I didn’t work in theatre I would be…

A shell of a human. Or a waitress.

8. Something people don’t know about me is…

Lucie Jones and David Hunter at West End LIVE 2019 (Photo: Pamela Raith)

I read a LOT. Probably a book a week. I love to read and find it very relaxing!

9. The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…

Speak about yourself the way you would your best friends and loved ones. You’ll thank yourself for it!

10. The one thing I wish I could tell my younger self is…

Give yourself time, my love. It’ll happen when it’s meant to. Enjoy every step along the way and GO SEE EVERY DAMN SHOW THERE IS!

And it’s a starry one: Ashley Roberts, Blake Harrison and Lucie Jones have all taken on new roles this week in the smash-hit musical.

The show has recently extended its booking period at the Adelphi Theatre up to 7 December, as audiences just can’t get enough of the heart-warming story of love and friendship. Take a first look at the new star trio in action below.

Ashley is playing the role of Dawn, and Lucie leads the show as Jenna. And although Lucie has covered her new role on-stage recently, former Pussycat Doll Ashley is making her West End debut. Throwing his comic prowess into the mix is The Inbetweeners’ star Blake Harrison, who’s also started this week in the role of Ogie.

Waitress uses an original score by 7-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles to tell the tale of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who wistfully dreams of a happier life. But the arrival of a hot new doctor – and a little fortune – might be about to change her life’s recipe completely.

Waitress is also participating in Kids Week; throughout August, a child aged 16 or under can go free when accompanied by an adult paying full price. Adults can also purchase up to two extra children’s tickets at half price, and there are no booking fees to pay.

First look: Ashley Roberts & Lucie Jones in Waitress rehearsals https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/first-look-ashley-roberts-lucie-jones-waitress-rehearsals/ Tue, 04 Jun 2019 11:39:39 +0000 http://&p=111417998 If there’s one thing that watching numerous seasons of the Great British Bake Off have taught us, it’s that baking… is difficult. And if you’re going to tackle it in front of West End audiences, it’s probably best to get some practice in. And thus, smoothly (?) segwaying in, we’ve got an exciting first look at Waitress‘ new stars Ashley Roberts and Lucie Jones in the rehearsal room as they prepare to take part in the smash-hit new musical.

Ashley will be playing the role of Dawn, and Lucie the lead role of Jenna, from Monday 17 June. And although Lucie has covered the role on-stage recently, for former Pussycat Doll and Strictly Come Dancing finalist Ashley, Waitress marks an exciting West End debut. They’ll be joined by The Inbetweeners’ star Blake Harrison, who’s taking on the role of Ogie from the same date.

The Inbetweeners’ star Blake Harrison will join the West End cast, playing Ogie from Monday 17 June.

Blake, who played Neil Sutherland in the award-winning comedy, will assume the role from NBC’s 30 Rock star Jack McBrayer, who will play his final performance in the role on Saturday 15 June.

Blake’s casting adds to that of Lucie Jones (in the lead role of Jenna) and Ashley Roberts (as Dawn) in the smash-hit new London musical, both of whom will also assume their roles from 17 June. They take over the roles from Katharine McPhee and Laura Baldwin respectively.

As well as playing Neil in the famous E4 comedy and its two movie adaptations, Blake has previously starred on stage in STEP 9 (Of 12) at Trafalgar Studios and The End Of The Pier at the Park Theatre.

Waitress began performances at London’s Adelphi Theatre in February, officially opening in March to rave reviews. The musical, which tells the story of a waitress and pie-maker who dreams her way out of a loveless marriage, is now booking until 19 October.

The show has also confirmed that the date of its next Cast Album Karaoke Night – which sees audience members go on-stage to sing Sara Bareilles’ music and lyrics – will be Wednesday 26 June, with further details to be announced.
