Each show’s schedule is different so shop around, but remember to take advantage of these offers you must book by 31 January.

This is particularly true of shows which haven’t opened yet. Given these shows are new and may be unfamiliar to you, we thought we’d take a closer look at shows in the New Year Sale which are opening in the coming months…

January

Gerry & Sewell opens on 13 January. This heart-warming comedy about friendships and underdogs follows two Newcastle United fans desperate to get a season ticket. After a sell-out run in the North East, the play transfers to the West End for only two weeks.

Chichester Festival Theatre has a strong record of West End transfers – think Half A Sixpence, Quiz, revivals of Gypsy and Caroline, Or Change – and it shows no signs of slowing down.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry is a new musical based on Rachel Joyce’s profound and funny novel, with music by indie musician Passenger. It had rave reviews in Chichester last summer and transfers with original cast members Mark Addy and Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell, with previews from 29 January and New Year Sale prices in February, too.

Theatre company Frantic Assembly celebrate their 30th anniversary with a new play, Lost Atoms, written by Anna Jordan who wrote episodes of Succession and One Day. The play charts the life-changing relationship of Jess and Robbie and focusses on how differing memories can change our stories. It runs at the Lyric Hammersmith from 30 January – 28 February, taking part in the New Year Sale for February performances.

February

For one night only, X Factor contestant turned West End star Lucie Jones is Live At The London Palladium. Blending her live gig roots with the drama of her stage career, including regular performances in Les Miserables and the leading role in Waitress, this will be a unique concert that showcases her incredible vocal talent. Expect surprise appearances and unique collaborations. 16 February only.

Evening All Afternoon is a brand new play by American playwright Anna Ziegler, who had a hit on the West End with Photograph 51, starring Nicole Kidman. This play explores the relationship between a stepmother and stepdaughter, confronting the human dilemma about facing loss and opening up to new connections. The play runs from 19 February – 11 April at the Donmar Warehouse, an intimate and compelling space with a storied history.

March

Sibling duo Nina and Moses Raine (Consent and Donkey Heart, respectively) team up for a new translation of Summer Folk, by Russian dramatist Maxim Gorky. 1905 was a hot, beautiful summer in Russia, but while the elite wine and dine, a storm is on the horizon. The story is fitting for the Raines, whose great uncle was Boris Pasternak, author of Doctor Zhivago. Summer Folk runs from 12 March – 29 April at the National Theatre.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe will lead the cast of Kinky Boots

While you can find opera and ballet at the London Coliseum for much of the year, London’s largest theatre stages a big musical each summer. This March will see the first West End revival of Kinky Boots.

The show is based on the British film and true story of a Northampton shoe factory that hits hard times, then takes a chance on becoming a specialist in shoewear for drag artists. With music and lyrics by pop star Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles), this production will be led by Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe in the role of Lola.  It runs from 17 March – 11 July with New Year Sale offers on most April, May and June performances.

Cruise release new single ahead of world premiere

Cruise

‘Rhythm of Us’ is the brand-new single released from the world premiere of CRUISE is available on all streaming platforms now. Written and recorded by the show’s composer John Elliott, the song is a love note to synth-drenched 80s pop and features guest vocals from Jack Holden and Jamie Lambert.

John Elliott said: “With ‘Rhythm of Us’ I was trying to tap into that iconic mix of heartbreak and euphoria that so much of the best 80s dance floor music has. Those tunes that take loss and pain and wrap them up in delicious beats and melodies that you just can’t help but dance. I wanted this track to have that cathartic feeling of release and celebration amidst the sorrow of losing someone. Like Michael says in the play, “Turning heartbreak and anxiety into physical liberation / That’s the power of music, that’s the power of dance!”

Written and performed by Jack Holden (War Horse, West End; Ink, Almeida Theatre), CRUISE is an urgent, moving and inspirational new play with live music and spoken word. Bringing to life 1980’s Soho, this one-man show is a celebration of queer culture; a kaleidoscopic musical and spoken word tribute to the veterans of the AIDs crisis. CRUISE will reopen the Duchess Theatre in the West End from 18 May – 13 June.

Based on a true story Jack was told whilst volunteering for Switchboard, the LGBTQ+ Listening Service, this new play, directed by Bronagh Lagan, shines a light on a generation devastated by HIV and AIDs. The show will feature an uplifting 80s electronic soundtrack featuring classic anthems as well as original new music performed live by John Elliott.

New musical adaption of the infamous Lady Chatterley’s Lover comes to the West End in June

Lady Chatterley s Lover

The new musical adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s infamous literary classic, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, will come to the West End for a strictly limited run this summer. Crafted by composer John Robinson (Behind the Iron Mask, Duchess Theatre; Closer to the Sun, Harold Pinter Theatre), this world premiere at Shaftesbury Theatre will reenergise Lawrence’s sensation for a new audience.

This world premiere adaptation will be filmed to stream later in the year before future live performances.

The impassioned tale of female agency and Lady Chatterley’s pursuit of a life more than halflived changed the literary landscape of Britain. Banned as scandalous erotica when first published and subject of a watershed obscenity trial, Lawrence’s text caused outrage not just because of the expletives and explicit sexual relationship, but because it presented a physical relationship that traversed social class divides. This intense and fiery classic will find new frenzied power in its translation to the stage.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is directed by the award-winning Sasha Regan (Blondel, Union Theatre; The Last Five Years, St. James Theatre) with original libretto by Phil Willmott (Once Upon a Time At the Adelphi; Relativity: The Einstein Musical), and production design by Andrew Exeter (High Fidelity, Turbine Theatre; Scaramouche Jones, Stream.Theatre).

Composer John Robinson comments, I am thrilled to be back in the West End with my latest musical – it’s a project very close to my heart given my own roots in D.H. Lawrence country and I hope to give due justice to both the ground-breaking novel as well as the area in which it is set. By recording the show for streaming later this year we’re also guaranteeing it a fabulous future life to ensure more audiences can enjoy the work.

Linzi Hateley joins the cast of Joseph for special performances https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/olivier-award-nominated-narrator-joseph-join-production-special-performances/ Fri, 07 May 2021 09:47:31 +0000 http://&p=111426973 Michael Harrison and the Really Useful Group are delighted to announce today that Linzi Hateley – who starred in the original London Palladium production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – will make a sensational return to the musical in this summer’s strictly limited season at the iconic theatre.

Linzi – who was nominated for an Olivier Award for her performance as the Narrator, and starred alongside Jason Donovan in the title role – will perform as in the role at special performances, in the new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s legendary musical.

The production will begin performances on Thursday 1 July (Gala Night: Thursday 15 July) and will be one of the highlights in the return of theatre to the UK cultural landscape.

Alexandra Burke will play The Narrator for the other performances this summer in the celebrated musical. Her many West End credits include the lead roles in The Bodyguard, Sister Act, Chess and Chicago. Alexandra first rose to fame winning The X-Factor in 2008, and has since gone on to sell over 5 million records.

Jason Donovan will return in the role of Pharaoh. He was originally in the show when he made his defining stage performance as the title character of Joseph in the 1990s, in a sold-out 18-month run which produced a No.1 single and best-selling soundtrack album. Jason raised the roof of the London Palladium in 2019 as Pharaoh, who rocks ‘Song of the King’ in the iconic musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Jac Yarrow caused a sensation when he made his professional stage debut playing Joseph, following in the footsteps of a line of stars who have previously played the title character. His portrayal of Joseph won him unanimous acclaim and an Olivier Award nomination, with his rendition of ‘Close Every Door To Me’ regularly stopping the show with standing ovations.

The production will begin live performances on Thursday 1 July, with Linzi Hateley’s first performance on Saturday 17th July after the proposed “Step Four” in the Government’s roadmap to easing restrictions, and therefore is planning to accommodate full-capacity audiences in accordance with the intended lifting of all limits on social contact.

Michael Harrison said: “This dream just keeps getting better. It was special enough to announce Alexandra Burke recently as the Narrator, but to now have the added bonus of Linzi playing the role at special performances – and to reunite her with Jason Donovan again at the London Palladium –  turns Joseph into a dream ticket. The combination of nostalgia for the original Palladium production, coupled with the excitement of our new critically acclaimed version, means we all have a summer to look forward to.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat enjoyed a completely sold out season in 2019. Audiences and critics were unanimous in their acclaim for the legendary musical – the first major collaboration by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber – as it returned to the London Palladium.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be directed by Laurence Connor. Laurence’s credits include the acclaimed London production of School of Rock and the Tony-Award nominated production on Broadway, the recent London productions of Miss Saigon and Chess, the international arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar and he is also the Co-Director of the new version of Les Misérables which has enjoyed worldwide success including Broadway, UK and US tours. He is the director of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of Cinderella, which also opens this July at the Gillian Lynne Theatre.

Laurence will be joined on the creative team by Choreographer JoAnn M Hunter (who has 20 Broadway shows to her credit, including School of Rock and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever), the award-winning Morgan Large who will design the set and costumes, Lighting Designer Ben Cracknell and Sound Designer Gareth Owen.

Released as a concept album in 1969, the stage version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has become one of the world’s most beloved family musicals. The multi-award-winning show, which began life as a small-scale school concert, has been performed hundreds of thousands of times including multiple runs in the West End and on Broadway, international number one tours, and productions in over 80 countries as far afield as Austria and Zimbabwe and from Israel to Peru! The show features songs that have gone on to become pop and musical theatre standards, including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To Me, Jacob and Sons, There’s One More Angel In Heaven and Go Go Go Joseph.

Told entirely through song with the help of the Narrator, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son Joseph and his eleven brothers. After being sold into hardship by the brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled showman, the Pharaoh. As Joseph strives to resolve Egypt’s famine, he becomes Pharaoh’s right-hand man and eventually reunites with his family.

This epic family production is the perfect way to celebrate shows returning #BackOnStage so get your tickets now!

Six London theatres we can’t wait to visit again https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/six-london-theatres-we-cant-wait-to-visit-again/ Wed, 07 Apr 2021 12:11:42 +0000 http://&p=111426520 Whether you’re watching Hairspray in a London theatre or enjoying The Mousetrap in the West End, there’s something truly magical about a night spent at the theatre.  With numerous venues and shows announcing reopening, we’re dreaming of all the theatres we can’t wait to visit again including these six London theatres:

Adelphi Theatre

tkjls1bimafb2z81nwwa

When talking about classic London theatres, the Adelphi will always have its name in the hat. The arty venue is situated on The Strand, just a few metres up from bustling Charing Cross and boasts a proud and long tradition. The theatre’s history could even challenge the plot of Hamlet, with the actor William Terriss mysteriously stabbed to death in 1897 leading to speculation that his ghost roams the halls to this day. Back to the Future: The Musical is set to make its way onto the hallowed stage in May 2021 – so make sure to pick up tickets!

Cambridge Theatre

Looking for a fresher face? Built in 1930 for Bertie Meyer, the Cambridge Theatre is one of the younger theatres in the West End. With its beautiful pillars and gorgeous statue figures in the circular entrance foyer, the striking interior design of the Cambridge Theatre is something to behold. The venue is currently home to Matilda the Musical – a Dahl delight that is perfectly suited to Cambridge Theatre’s stage.

Duke of York’s Theatre

Duke Of York's Theatre London

Named to honour King George V, the Duke of York’s Theatre was opened all the way back in 1892 and has hosted the crème de la crème of theatre productions ever since. In its 129 year history, the theatre is showing no signs of slowing down – Duke of York’s will be showing the critically acclaimed National Theatre play The Ocean at the End of the Lane, adding another classic to its already sky-high list of stellar productions.

Harold Pinter Theatre

Best known for hosting new productions and classic revivals, the Harold Pinter Theatre’s namesake would be delighted with the direction the venue is heading. The venue has a long and proud history premiering productions from the best playwrights around, including Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge and Tennessee Williams’ Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. The newest play in this lineage is Good – a brand new production directed by Olivier Award-winning Dominic Cooke and starring David Tennant. You won’t want to miss this one.

If you’re a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber (and who isn’t?), the London Palladium is the theatre for you. The venue was built in 1910 and survived intact throughout World War II, despite a bomb crashing through the roof and lodging itself unexploded on stage. London Palladium has gone from strength to strength ever since, hosting the Royal Variety Performance each year on top of musicals such as Cats and The Sound of Music. Looking to clear away the cobwebs of lockdown when things are back to normal? Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is returning in July 2021.

It’s safe to say that the Old Vic doesn’t like playing by the rules. The legendary venue is the jewel in the crown of London theatre and sticks out with its innovative space that can transform into multiple staging formats. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, the Old Vic isn’t afraid to go to the edge of what’s possible on stage. The production Local Hero will return when the old theatre’s doors are opened again and it’s a play you won’t want to miss. After 200 years of creative adventure, it isn’t time to call curtains on the Old Vic’s imagination just yet.

It’s been a tough year for theatre-lovers, but with lockdowns beginning to ease, we’re sure that venues will be back with a bang. Make sure to check out these top six London theatres to fall in love with theatre all over again or have a browse through our running list of London shows to look forward to this year.

Pantoland at The Palladium https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/pantoland-at-the-palladium/ Fri, 09 Oct 2020 08:41:23 +0000 http://&p=111424716 Qdos Entertainment and LW Theatres have today (9 October 2020) announced that this Christmas Julian Clary will take us on a magical trip to Pantoland at The Palladium. Performances will begin at the world-famous theatre on 12 December 2020 running until 3 January 2021, with tickets on sale from 10am today.

The London Palladium, the home of pantomime, will welcome back panto favourites Paul Zerdin, Nigel Havers and Gary Wilmot, as well as past stars Ashley Banjo & Diversity and Charlie Stemp. Making their debut will be West End sensations Beverley Knight and Jac Yarrow.

Returning for a fifth consecutive year, The London Palladium pantomime has become an essential part of Christmas in the West End, with record-breaking box office success year-after-year. Pantoland at The Palladium, devised by Michael Harrison, will be a treasure-trove of The London Palladium panto past and exciting new surprises written especially for the show, guaranteeing an unmissable treat for panto and musical theatre fans alike.

Celebrating the very best of pantomime, with comedy in abundance, this star-filled extravaganza will play to a socially-distanced audience. The show will feature the work of Olivier Award-Winning Team director Michael Harrison, choreographer Karen Bruce, set designer Ian Westbrook, costume designer Hugh Durrant, lighting designer Ben Cracknell, sound designer Gareth Owen and composer and orchestrator Gary Hind.

The production at The Palladium has been made possible as a result of a creative initiative announced by The National Lottery today which it hopes will enable hundreds of thousands of theatregoers to enjoy socially distanced pantomime this Christmas in theatres across the nation. The initiative will see The National Lottery buy seats that need to remain empty to enable social-distancing, complying with relevant government and public health guidance. By making it viable for theatres to open their doors to the general public, up to 250,000 tickets are expected to be available, with more than 20,000 free tickets available for National Lottery players and the rest to go on sale. This will generate vital income for theatres and help restore jobs – while providing much-needed cheer for panto lovers at Christmas.

Pantoland at The Palladium is the first of a number of productions at theatres across the country to be announced, with further venues to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

The London Palladium is an official government pilot venue, working to demonstrate that theatres can open and operate fully within the current coronavirus and social distancing guidance. Performances of Pantoland at The Palladium will run in accordance with a wide suite of health and safety measures (including reconfiguration of seating across the venue and the mandatory wearing of face coverings) that keep audiences, staff and crews safe.

We went to the first live performance in a London Theatre in months! https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/we-went-to-the-first-live-performance-in-a-london-theatre-in-months/ Thu, 23 Jul 2020 16:47:48 +0000 http://&p=111423980 Today was a milestone moment for live theatre, as Beverley Knight took to the stage of the London Palladium, to perform to the first live audience in a London theatre since the historic decision to close theatres on 16 March this year.

Two of our team here at Official London Theatre were lucky enough to go along and experience London’s first live indoor theatre in over four months.

Andrew Lloyd Webber gave a speech at the beginning of the event, telling Beverley she was brave to come on to such an empty auditorium, acknowledging that a socially distanced audience is a bit of a “sad sight” for those who love the shared experience of live theatre.

He also said he wanted to stress the importance of the work they’ve been doing for all theatres, saying:

“The measures that we’ve taken at the Palladium are not just about getting the London Palladium open, it’s nothing to do with that. It’s about my passion for the theatre and for live entertainment all over the country, all over the world.

London Palladium

“Up there, I can see the seat I sat in the first time I ever saw anything in live theatre which was the Palladium Pantomime when I was about seven and it’s one of those experiences that you cannot ever eradicate. Theatre is my life and its the one thing that I feel I can do is to give something back to the profession that has been so good to me.”

He spoke about how they have looked to Korea – who are ahead of us in their recovery from the coronavirus crisis – saying that as theatres were being locked down in the UK, Phantom Of The Opera was just re-opening in Seoul.

He also spoke about the long lead time that theatre will need to get up and running – weeks for ongoing shows and months for new shows – and urged again that the Government assists the industry with a target date for productions to re-open without social distancing.

He spoke specifically of the pressures of regional theatres, especially given that so many rely on Pantomimes as their biggest performances of the year, and said that many will have to cancel entirely if they don’t know within the next month or so. Pleading with the government to safeguard these institutions from shutting down he said simply if he could say something to the Prime Minister it would just be “give us a date, mate”.

Check out our vlog of the historic event, and read on to hear a little more from Jess and Richard about what it was like!

We asked Jess what it was like to be back in a theatre watching a live performance after all this time.

“It was such a special experience to be there you could just tell that everyone was so excited to be back in a theatre, there were people behind us in the queue that were saying oh my god it’s been so long since I’ve been in a queue to have my bags checked!!

“It was such a positive atmosphere. It was so easy, the front of house staff were so lovely, obviously, everyone was wearing masks and I didn’t hear one person complaining at any point. Hearing the sound of actual live music; drums and guitars and Beverley’s voice was just incredible. There is literally nothing like hearing someone’s powerful vocals just being exploded into an auditorium like that.

“I think Beverley was such a great person to do this because she just breathes theatre. It was so fun, there was some disco, a bit of soul, a bit of musical theatre. There were moments when we were up dancing and clapping our hands and then there were moments where we were just sat down and weeping at her voice.

“At the end she did a performance of Stand By Me acapella and obviously referencing all the different struggles that have been going on during this period and how that song was so important. It was just so emotional, because seeing a Black woman up on stage being able to sing that song and being the first person able to perform for such a long time was just so special.”

bev 1 tb0m8m

Richard explained to us what the experience was like getting in to the theatre.

“We got to the theatre and queued outside along the side of the building. The queue moved very quicky while we were queueing we had to scan a QR code which then meant we could fill our details for Tack and Trace. It was all very very quick we probably only queued for 10 minutes maximum!

“We had our bags checked, our tickets were scanned directly from our phone, and there was hand santetiser on the way in. They had a full-body anti-viral mister that’s not operational yet but we were shown it!

“It was incredibly calm, all the ushers were incredibly well trained. There was a one-way system down to the stalls and again, a one-way system between going into the auditorium.

“When we got in there, all the seats that were not available to sit in were covered up, and there were at least 2 seats within each group. So the auditorium was very spread out but it was a great atmosphere and wonderful to see it really.

“We also ordered an interval drink which we did with an usher in the auditorium and then that was delivered to us almost immediately so again, really slick. Everyone was just really calm and it felt very safe and everyone was just so excited to be there.”

Richard and Jess documented their experience at the Palladium on our Instagram too so head over there to see what the socially distanced day out looked like!

How will the pilot performance at the Palladium work? https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/how-will-the-pilot-performance-at-the-palladium-work/ Wed, 22 Jul 2020 13:57:32 +0000 http://&p=111423967 Tomorrow marks a milestone in the re-opening of theatres across the UK, as the first pilot performance goes ahead at the London Palladium. The first performance to take place in a London Theatre in months will be a concert from none other than the iconic Beverley Knight.

These trial performances will help test social distancing measures of indoor performances ahead of the 1 August, when will be allowed to resume.

Measures put in place to keep audiences safe include mandatory masks and temperature checks, e-tickets and contactless security checks, extra hand sanitizing points and an anti-viral demisting machine, which Andrew Lloyd Webber described as ‘very theatrical’.

These trials will be socially distanced, but Andrew Lloyd Webber is keen to continue testing into full capacity scenarios. He has joined many other industry leaders in welcoming the re-opening of theatres, but stating that most productions still won’t find it possible to open with distancing in place. He explained that most plays need to have an audience at at least 65 percent capacity – even higher for musicals – to begin to be economically viable.

We wish Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Palladium and Beverley Knight the best of luck tomorrow, and we can’t wait to let you know how this historic pilot performance goes!

Jac Yarrow And Jason Donovan are coming back to Joseph https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/jac-yarrow-and-jason-donovan-are-coming-back-to-joseph/ Fri, 08 Nov 2019 15:56:08 +0000 http://&p=111420465 Jac Yarrow And Jason Donovan will return to Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium next summer.

Jason Donovan played Joseph in a sold-out 18-month run of the show that produced a number 1 single and a best-selling soundtrack album in the 1990s. He returned to Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium this year as Pharaoh. Much to fans’ delight, Jason will reprise this performance next summer, and will be belting out the Song Of The King from July 2020.

Jason said: “Following on from the success of this year’s awesome, reimagined version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, I’m delighted to be returning in the summer of 2020 to reprise my role as the Pharaoh.

This year was an absolute joy. Joseph has such a special connection with its audience and it has a huge emotional connection for me. Quite simply the show is pure musical magic. To be able to lean on the past yet build something new for the role of Pharaoh is an opportunity that cannot be done just once, and for performer or audience member alike, it just doesn’t get much better than the Palladium experience.”

Jac Yarrow made his professional stage debut this year as Joseph and blew London away. His portrayal of the the titular character won fans and critics alike, winning him the Joe Allen Best West End Debut Award earlier this year. His rendition of ‘Close Every Door To Me’ regularly stopped the show with standing ovations.

Jac said: “Playing the iconic role of Joseph at its spiritual home, The Palladium, last summer was what I thought was a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. When I was asked to step back into the Dreamcoat for a second time, I couldn’t quite believe it. I can’t wait to be back!”

Book your tickets below to see Jac Yarrow And Jason Donovan singing their hearts out in the flesh next summer!
