By now, we’re sure you know what you’re getting when you book to see Wicked for £20, Mamma Mia! for £30, or Les Misérables for £40. But what about some of the lesser known shows in the New Year Sale?

For the adventurous among you, we’re here to highlight a few hidden gems in case that are taking part in the New Year Sale, so you can try something new for 2026.

Ballet Shoes

Dancers in turquoise costumes with white frills perform energetically on a wooden stage.
Ballet Shoes dazzles and excites with its relentless energy. Photo by Alastair Muir.

What’s it about? Three adopted sisters get taken into the house of an Edwardian explorer and paleontologist. Under the guidance of his niece and childhood nanny, the three girls grow and fight to pursue their differing passions in a world not built for women with ambition.

Why should I see it? The National Theatre’s adaptation of this 1930s novel was loved by children and adults alike when it premiered in November 2024 – so much so they brought it back a year later.

The three girls are full of fire and charisma; you can’t help be charmed by their never-say-die attitude. The set is like a madcap box of wonders that’s a delight to look at and the show will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy.

What’s the offer? Tickets for £20, £30, £40, £50, £60 for Tue – Thu performances in Jan and Mon – Thu performances in Feb until 20 Feb.

Evening All Afternoon

What’s it about? Jennifer is about to become Delilah’s stepmother. She wants to connect but they couldn’t be further apart.

Why should I see it? The Donmar Warehouse is a great venue – with only three rows on each side of the stage, you’re always close to the atmosphere which is perfect for these kind of intimate two-handers. Anna Ziegler’s last play, Photograph 51, won Evening Standard and WhatsOnStage Awards, with an Olivier Award nomination for Nciole Kidman in the lead role. This could be another award winner in the making.

What’s the offer? Tickets for £40 or £50 on all performances (19 Feb – 11 Apr).

Gerry & Sewell

Gerry Sewell sits on a Metro train, wearing a dark jacket, surrounded by passengers and urban scenery.
Gerry, Sewell and their dog Rusty thinking up a new scheme to get a season ticket

What’s it about? Two Geordie best friends Gerry & Sewell haven’t got a lot going from them – with no jobs, Gerry’s family falling apart and Sewell’s dad in ill-health – so they set their sights on their ultimate dream: A season ticket to Newcastle United.

Why should I see it? It’s an underdog story that celebrates the unexpected hero in all of us, as well as the importance of friendship and shared passions. Like the story, the play itself is an underdog, having started at Laurel’s – a small social club in the North East – and earned its way up to a two-week run in the West End.

What’s the offer? Top price tickets for £40, £50 or £60 all performances – must end 24 January.

High Noon

What’s it about? In the the days of the Wild West, small town marshall Will Kane prepares to leave town after marrying Amy Fowler. But word arrives that Frank Miller, a vicious outlaw, has been released from prison and will arrive by the noon train. Torn between the honour of his new wife and the duty of his old job, Will must make a choice by noon.

Why should I see it? The 1952 Gary Cooper / Grace Kelly Western film, on which the play is based, is in the conversation for greatest movie ever made. While this play stays true to the source material, the production has changed its inspiration from McCarthyism to current world events to remain as timely as ever. Plus it unites two great acting talents in Tony Award winner Billy Crudup (The Morning Show) and Olivier Award winner Denise Gough (People, Places And Things and Andor)

What’s the offer? Tickets for £30, £40, or £50 for Mon – Fri performances for weeks beginning 26 Jan and 2 & 9 Feb.

Mrs. President

What’s it about? Already having todeal with the grief of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, his widow, Mary Lincoln has to contend with social attacks from an envious elite. She engages the help of the world’s first celebrity photographer, Mathew Brady, who helped her husband win the presidency. But their partnership soon unravels in a battle for creative control.

Why should I see it? The play is written by playwright and historian (and artist) John Ransom Phillips so promises to be an accurate and thought-provoking account of power, female agency and representation. Of course, if you’re less concerned with historical accuracy and more concerned with a barrel of laughs, Mary Lincoln is also the lead character in outrageous camp comedy Oh, Mary! at the Trafalgar Theatre – also taking part in the New Year Sale.

What’s the offer? Tickets for £10, £20, £30 or £40 for all performances (23 Jan – 8 Mar).

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold

David Rubin points a gun at Rory Keenan, who holds a wooden chair, in a dramatic scene.
Alec Leamas goes back into the cold for one final mission. Photo by Johan Persson.

What’s it about? Set in the murky world of the Cold War, British intelligence officer Alec Leamas is ready to retire and ‘come in from the cold’. But following the killing of his most reliable source, Leamas is tempted into one dangerous, deceptive and personal final mission.

Why should I see it? This is the first stage adaptation of a novel by John le Carré, the master of the modern spy thriller. Performed in Sohoplace’s intimate in-the-round space with period costume, this a tense, sophisticated and provocative look at the political era that shaped the modern world. Must end 21 February.

What’s the offer? Tickets for £60 (£20 off) for performances on 21, 26, 27 & 28 Jan and 2 & 3 Feb. Last few tickets remaining.

Summerfolk

What’s it about? During the hot and beautiful Russian summer of 1905, Russia’s elite holiday in the countryside to enjoy the best things in life. But as the party continues, how long can they ignore the storm on the horizon?

Why should I see it? Maxim Gorky was one of Russia’s most successful authors of the age, with five Nobel Prize nominations, although he was also imprisoned for his work as he dared to criticise the status quo. This exciting new version by siblings Nina and Moses Raine (descended from Dr Zhivago author Boris Pasternak) promises to be a razor-sharp portrait of class, privilege and denial.

What’s the offer? Tickets for £20, £30, £40, £50 for most performances from 12 Mar – 29 Apr.

Haunting the opera house and feared by all, he manipulates the actors and crew. But when he falls in love with a chorus girl whose old friend returns to rescue her, will he get his revenge?

School Of Rock – The Musical

School Of Rock The Musical with NYS Sticker template y92ud3

If you’ve seen the movie featuring Jack Black, you’ll remember the guitar-thrashing, drum-rolling celebration of the power of rock.

Dewey Finn is a down-on-his-luck wannabe rock star struggling to make ends meet and determined to do so through the power of music. Posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school, Finn discovers his students’ hidden musical talents, and opts to enlist his fifth-graders in a quest to conquer The Battle Of The Bands – but can he do so without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation School Of Rock – The Musical has been leaving audiences rocking night after night at the Gillian Lynne Theatre since its West End premier in 2016. But with it’s final performance on the 1st March, the New Year Sale is just another excuse to snap up some tickets before it closes.

Oi Frog & Friends Live is a little more recent, but has rapidly become a new firm fave similarly full of bright puppets and more rhymes than you know what to do with..

For older children, the celebrated Leeds Playhouse production of The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe has transferred down to London with heaps of magical realism and charming illusions.

Something to expand your horizons…

Uncle Vanya ensemble. Photo by Seamus Ryan.

There’s a real range of dramas on in London at the moment, from brand new plays to much-anticipated revivals and new interpretations of the classics.

In our New Year Sale, you can grab tickets to see the incredibly starry cast in Uncle Vanya, featuring Toby Jones and Richard Armitage as well as Rosalind Eleazar, Aimee Lou Wood, Anna Calder-Marshall, Dearbhla Molloy, Peter Wight and Ciarán Hinds!

There are three fantastic shows at The National – a retelling of Chekhov’s Three Sisters set against the backdrop of the Biafran Civil War in Nigeria, a revival of The Visit starring Lesley Manville and Hugo Weaving, and The Welkin, a new play from Lucy Kirkwood about a woman condemned to hang in 1700s Britain starring Maxine Peake.

The National’s production of Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste Of Honey has transferred over to Trafalgar Studios, if you missed the critically acclaimed production the first time round.

The RSC’s London season also has some fantastic offerings for you, with brand new productions of As You Like It, The Taming Of The Shrew and Measure For Measure. The RSC also present Kunene And The King, in which two men from contrasting walks of life are thrust together to reflect on a quarter century of change in South Africa.

The 35th anniversary production of Coming Clean – centred around the open relationship of seemingly perfect couple Tony and Greg – has come back to London to break some more hearts in the intimate Trafalgar Studios.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, you could always check out The Gift, which describes itself as “an outrageous comedy drama about imperialism, cross-racial adoption, cultural appropriation and drinking tea”. What could be better?

Something that will amaze you…

English National Ballet's Le Corsaire

It’s not just drama and musicals in the New Year Sale, we’ve got a whole bunch of dance, opera and variety shows too!

There are a couple of offerings from the English National Ballet; Le Corsaire, which follows the swashbuckling adventures of a dashing pirate, Conrad, and his feisty girlfriend Medora as well as tickets to their 70th Anniversary Gala, which will feature performances from shows over the last 70 years, integrating live dance with archive footage.

For a modern twist on an old fairytale, Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes is back at Sadler’s Wells for another winter season, while Opera Undone takes classic operas Tosca and La Bohème and reduces them to 60 minutes each and translating them into English in an attempt to open up Opera to a wider audience.

We’re also very excited to offer you tickets for the European premiere of Circus 1903. Including all of the wonder, glitz and glamour of an old-fashioned circus right down to the elephants! Though in this production they take the guise of beautiful life-like, life-size puppets.

Something to make you shiver…

The Woman In Black at the Fortune Theatre

If your brain needs stimulating after vegging out in front of the telly all Christmas, what better than a good old fashioned scare to wake you up?

West End Agatha Christie classics The Mousetrap and Witness For The Prosecution are both in the New Year Sale this year, and they’ll keep you guessing all the way to the curtain call – just make sure you keep the secrets!

If you’re looking for all-out scare tactics though, The Woman In Black is, as ever, your best call. Even with minimal props and a tiny cast of two, this storytelling stalwart still manages to be objectively terrifying.

Touching The Void is the new play based on the film & autobiography of the same name. Following climber Joe Simpson’s struggle home after he was left with a broken leg at the bottom of an icy ravine, this chilling drama is beautifully staged and will have the adrenaline swirling round your body from the word go.

If you want more of an existential scare, however, Faustus: That Damned Woman is the one for you. Based off the age-old Faust myth, Chris Bush’s new adaptation recasts Faust as a woman and tells us through a new lens the price of selling your soul to the devil.

Matthew Broderick make his West End debut

Seems like Ferris Bueller isn’t due another day off for a while, as Matthew Broderick is coming over to London to make his West End debut.

Starring alongside Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern, Matthew will be appearing in Kenneth Lonergan’s new play, The Starry Messenger.

Set in the 1990s New York, the story revolves around an astronomer at the city’s planetarium, Mark Williams (Matthew). Mark is going through a mid-life crisis, feeling his strongest connection with the stars above, rather than to his job or marriage. But then he meets single mum Angela (Elizabeth), and he soon starts to have a little more faith in the universe.

The show will be on at the Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited 13-week season between Thursday 16 May and Saturday 10 August.

That’s right, you’ve got an entire year to see these rebellious, rocking, power-house queens tell their side of the her-story with King Henry The Eighth.

And the news doesn’t stop there, with a new cast for the production’s second year in the Aldwych Theatre, to still be announced! Although two things will remain the same; Adrienne Warren and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith will remain in the show as Tina and Ike Turner until 13 April 2019.

Louise Redknapp replaced by Caroline Sheen in 9 To 5 The Musical

Caroline Sheen will temporarily cover Louise and play the role of Violet in 9-5 The Musical.

Poor Louise Redknapp took a bit of a tumble last week, which means she’s temporarily not able to perform in 9 To 5 The Musical.

While she’s recovering, Caroline Sheen will be playing the role of Violet Newstead. You may have already seen Caroline in productions of Les Miserables, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Mary Poppins tour and The Witches Of Eastwick, so you’ll be in more than safe hands!

Caroline will be joining the previously announced all-star cast, including Amber Davies (Judy), Natalie McQueen (Doralee), Bonnie Langford (Roz) and Brian Conley (Franklin Hart Jr).

It’s not always easy to keep your finger on the theatrical pulse in London – new plays, musicals, comedies, dance and opera shows open across the city every day. But there’s no feeling quite like being one of the first people to see a new show (no spoilers, obvs).

And with exactly one month left of our New Year Sale – in which tickets are reduced to just £10, £20, £30 or £40 for select performances until 15 February – being the early bird to catch the show is pretty straightforward this year.

You heard it here first, folks: here’s a list of all the shows in Official London Theatre’s New Year Sale that (as of Tuesday 15 January) are yet to start their runs.

Manon (English National Ballet)

English National Ballet's Manon at London Coliseum

First performance: 16 January at the London Coliseum

What’s it about?: World-class performance and exquisite technique. The English National Ballet stage Kenneth MacMillan’s full-blooded ballet of passion, Manon, which will transport you from worlds of privilege and opulence to desolate Louisiana swamps and gambling dens – and all from the comfort of a London Coliseum seat.

We can’t wait to see it first because: We’ll be waxing lyrical about the English National Ballet performers, and their mastery of some of the most challenging roles in ballet. Do not try these moves at home.

The Unreturning

The Unreturning at Theatre Royal Stratford East (Photo: Tristram Kenton)

First performance: 16 January at Theatre Royal Stratford East

What’s it about?: The effect that war has on young lives – and what coming home really means. If ever there were a theatre company well-equipped to tell a series of such tender tales, it’s Frantic Assembly – whose celebrated and unique style is sure to trigger many a shed tear at Theatre Royal Stratford East.

We can’t wait to see it first because: Frantic Assembly’s productions are continually awe-inspiring and imaginative – and The Unreturning promises to be no different.

Leave To Remain

Leave To Remain at the Lyric Hammersmith

First performance: 18 January at the Lyric Hammersmith

What’s it about?: A young gay couple whose future is suddenly thrown into doubt – as one of them requires a visa. An exciting new play with songs by Matt Jones and Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, Leave To Remain sees Obi (Olivier Award nominee Tyrone Huntley) and Alex (Billy Cullum) explore the option of marriage and, in doing so, the need to confront their families and pasts.

We can’t wait to see it first because: Okereke’s songs – and Huntley’s angelic voice, for that matter – will almost certainly require a repeat visit on our part, so it’s best to get the first trip booked in now.

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical (Photo: Karla Gowett)

First performance: 21 January at The Other Palace

What’s it about?: A showcase of improvisation, invention, and musical genius. Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is the Olivier Award-winning, off-the-top-of-their-heads spectacular; each performance is completely different to the last. And with the audience able to influence the title, setting and musical styles, you can come with plenty of suggestions in mind!

We can’t wait to see it first because: Every show marks an opportunity to witness the musical – okay, musicals – of our dreams!

Dad’s Army Radio Show

Dad's Army Radio Show at Wilton's Music Hall

First performance: 22 January at Wilton’s Music Hall

What’s it about?: One of the nation’s favourite TV series of all-time, brilliantly staged in front of your own eyes. Performed by two acclaimed comics, David Benson and Jack Lane, Dad’s Army Radio Show puts on three classic radio episodes, based on favourite scripts from the show. Consider us enlisted!

We can’t wait to see it first because: It’ll get us quoting Dad’s Army to our family and friends all over again – “Don’t tell him, Pike!”

Notre Dame De Paris

The cast of Notre Dame De Paris (Photo: Alessandro Dobici)

First performance: 23 January at the London Coliseum

What’s it about?: A musical account of the love between hunchbacked bell-ringer, Quasimodo, and the gypsy, Esmeralda. You’ll do well to keep your jaw from dropping, as you marvel at extraordinary singers, dancers, acrobats, sets and costumes. 20 years after its debut in Paris, and almost 5000 shows later, Notre Dame De Paris continues to attract acclaim from across the globe.

We can’t wait to see it first because: It’s only here for six performances (until 27 January) – so the first theatregoers to see this world-famous musical will also be among the last!

Home, I’m Darling

Katherine Parkinson and Richard Harrington in Home, I'm Darling (Photo: Manuel Harlan)

First performance: 28 January at Duke of York’s Theatre

What’s it about?: One woman’s quest to become the perfect 1950s housewife. This inspired comedy from Laura Wade (who also wrote Posh, later on screen as The Riot Club) was nominated for a UK Theatre Award last year for Best New Play, before a celebrated National Theatre run. Now, it’s in the West End, asking: how happily married are the happily married?

We can’t wait to see it first because: Whisper it quietly, but rumours abound that there’s an utterly brilliant twist near the start of the show… a twist we can’t wait to knowingly nod about. *unknowingly nods*

German Cornejo’s Tango Fire

Tango Fire at Peacock Theatre

First performance: 29 January at Peacock Theatre

What’s it about?: Scorching speedy footwork and tantalisingly tight twirling. Tango Fire sizzles with authentic Argentinean tango courtesy of superstars German Cornejo, Gisela Galeassi, their fellow cast members, and the accompanying Tango Fuego Quartet. Cool-down interval ice-cream advised.

We can’t wait to see it first because: We’re looking forward to dazzling our friends by recreating some of Cornejo’s jaw-dropping moves. Or, at least, dazzle them by trying…

Come From Away

The original Broadway cast of Come From Away (Photo: Matthew Murphy)

First performance: 30 January at the Phoenix Theatre

What’s it about?: Goodwill galore. Come From Away tells the story of 7000 lost souls; air passengers unexpectedly grounded in Canada, following the events of 9/11. But despite initial nerves and tensions, the small community of Gander, Newfoundland, welcomed them in with open arms – and so a number of heart-warming tales, told in this uplifting musical, were born.

We can’t wait to see it first because: All signs point towards this being a cherished West End mainstay for years to come. From its 7 Tony Award nominations on Broadway, to its acclaimed recent run across the Irish Sea in Dublin, Come From Away has picked up fans all over the world – and we’re looking forward to being amongst the first here in London.

The American Clock

The American Clock at The Old Vic

First performance: 4 February at The Old Vic

What’s it about?: Arthur Miller’s writing at its finest. The American Clock is all about one family’s unwavering faith in capitalism – even as everything crumbles around them. Backed by a soundtrack which fuses 1920s swing and jazz with contemporary sounds, The American Clock will spin up a world of financial crisis and salvation.

We can’t wait to see it first because: Its director Rachel Chavkin is a genius. She’s stunned Broadway with Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812 – only the 12 Tony Award nominations – and now the West End with Hadestown at the National Theatre. So we can’t wait to witness her interpretation of an Arthur Miller play…

The Price

David Suchet and Brendan Coyle in The Price (Photo: Nobby Clark)

First performance: 5 February at Wyndham’s Theatre

What’s it about?: David Suchet. Brendan Coyle. A riveting revival of an affecting play. What’s not to love? The Price centres on a veteran appraiser (Suchet), who looks to secure the best possible price for two brothers’ inherited family home and possessions. But what’s the true price that both brothers have paid… over their whole lives?

We can’t wait to see it first because: With dramatic revelations aplenty, The Price is the kind of twisting, turning show you simply have to be amongst the first attendees of.

Equus

Equus at Theatre Royal Stratford East

First performance: 15 February at Theatre Royal Stratford East

What’s it about?: A dark case for psychiatrist Dr Martin Dysart, whose newest patient, seventeen year-old Alan Strang, blinded six horses with a metal spike. As Dysart digs further and further into Strang’s psyche, he begins to call his own sense of purpose into question, as harrowing themes of religion, relationships and societal foundations come to the fore.

We can’t wait to see it first because: It’s all too rarely revived. Peter Shaffer’s play is a knockout psychological thriller – and this exciting new production promises to pull no punches.

There are plenty more shows opening in 2019. To find out more, visit our London theatre tickets page.
