In conversation with Alexia Khadime and Lucy St. Louis | Black History Month https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/in-conversation-with-alexia-khadime-and-lucy-st-louis-black-history-month/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 12:00:54 +0000 http://&p=111442510 This October, Black History Month celebrates its theme Saluting Our Sisters, which pays homage to black women throughout history. We’ve reached out to Black performers and creatives in the theatre industry to share their inspirations and journeys to the stage.

To kick off, we spoke to Alexia Khadime and Lucy St. Louis, who not only star in a story about sisterhood, but are the West End’s first black Elphaba and Glinda.

Who are your inspirations?

AK: My friends and mum inspire me in both my career and daily life. It’s honestly their strength as women and who they are, what they stand for, how they navigate career and life that’s inspiring. Some of my closest friends are in the industry and are mums too – though I know not always easy, they are truly amazing. I call them superwomen.

LSL: Growing up I had many actresses/singers who inspired me professionally like Audra McDonald, Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Barbara Streisand. That list goes on and continues to grow, especially with so much talent around now. Our industry is one continuous life lesson that constantly evolves. With so many peers, fellow actors and singers and such creativity there is always so much to learn, grow and gain inspiration from. Friends and family also play huge part of inspiration throughout my life.

How did you get into theatre?

LSL: I got into theatre through watching MGM musicals with my Grandma. She would put them on for me when I was little, and we would learn all the words then sing and dance around the house acting out all the scenes. Her love for music, theatre, film, costumes and design was another big inspirational influence in my life. She helped me ultimately discover that this was the world and career path I longed to venture into.

AK: When I was younger, I attended after school drama classes once a week and the lady who ran the classes also had an agency. At that time, I used to just sing around the house and didn’t think much of it. It was just fun. Someone then said to my mum I should do singing classes and it’s there where I started to do private lessons. So, between the classes and now having an agent that’s how I got into the industry. It wasn’t something I was thinking about as a career as it truly wasn’t my reality. I’ve always felt my career chose me.

How do your family and friends support your career?

LSL: My family and friends have been so supportive throughout my career, they have been there through the highs but also through the lows. The lows are sadly inevitable especially within this very high demanding profession. Having your own inner circle and support network, even if it’s just one person, is very important. I am very grateful to have incredible supporters around me.

AK: I am blessed to have such supportive friends who are honest and supportive, they come to watch me in shows, help me with audition prep and my mum has always been there. She allowed me to be me, never forced and assisted my interests when I was younger with ballet, figure skating, drama, street dance, singing classes, and still to this day she supports me and encourages me. Dries my tears when I’m low, and like my friends who are there with the ebb and flow of what the industry brings.

What advice would you give to young black performers dreaming of working in the theatre industry?

AK: Don’t just rely on your God given talent. Sharpen your tools. What you’ve been given is the foundation of something great. Treat your talent – whatever it may be – with care, honesty, and love. Nurture it. If your talent was gone tomorrow, how would it feel? Respect it, don’t take it for granted. Remember it is a gift. There will be disappointments but as my mum would say, every disappointment is for your good – when one door closes, many more open – it will make you stronger and every low place prepares you for your high place.

Practical advice is ask questions. Research. Remember knowledge is power.

LSL: The advice I would give firstly is to be kind to yourself! Work hard and know that you are enough, worthy and valued. That not getting one job or however many No’s does not define who you are. Never give up! Draw on inspiration from your fellow performers and surroundings. Keep the stage a safe place for creation, expression and no judgment, remember there is no wrong or right just interpretation. Take risks and don’t play things safe, some of the biggest risks or challenges bring the most unexpected rewards.

Hold the door open for others, I mean this in a literal and metaphorical way, as your actions and decisions could have a rippling effect for future generations.

Allow yourself to strive and go for your dreams, there is space for all of us to achieve. Believe in yourself. You got this!

Lucy St. Louis (Glinda) in Wicked, photo by Matt Crockett

What does sisterhood mean to you as a performer?

LSL: Sisterhood in life and within the industry is a bond and trust like no other. It’s a connection bound that helps one another. It celebrates and lifts each sister up yet it also acts as pillar of strength and amour when we need comfort. It nurtures, grows, and bestows wisdom and advice through generation to generation. It’s an unspoken pact that protects, respects and champions each other through every twist and turn of life.

AK: Sisterhood is love, respect, understanding, open, non-judging, loyal, compassionate forgiving. It’s family. And when you have that trust, that bond, there’s nothing like it.

What role does sisterhood play in the story of Wicked?

AK: The sisterhood in the show challenges these women to be their better selves. It shows the bond of two women who were probably least likely to have a sisterhood. Two women who are there for each other when it really counts. Two women who though part ways, cherish a true love, respect and understanding for each other that makes them bonded for life.

LSL: Wicked is one of those very rare and special shows that has the love of friendship at its core. A bond created that at the start seemed very unlikely, but through growth, learning, understanding and compassion forges an unbreakable friendship and sisterhood.

This sisterhood is echoed on and off stage throughout all of our wonderful Glinda’s and Elphaba’s. There is such love, respect and championing shared throughout the entire theatre world which is beautiful to see especially when carrying the weight of these epic roles.

My experience is even more meaningful by the fact that I get to share this moment with my dear friend and sister for over 10 years now, Alexia Khadime. Having 10 years of friendship between us, then going on to make history together as the first two black women to play these roles opposite each other in the West End in 17 years made getting this job even more significant and special. Our sisterhood on and off stage is woven within our portrayal of Glinda and Elphaba and that for me will always make this show and these characters an unforgettable experience.

Sisters of the West End https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/sisters-of-the-west-end/ Fri, 20 May 2022 11:27:49 +0000 http://&p=111433481 Sisterhood for life!

We felt the urge to give a shout out to our favourite West End sisters. From classical fairy tales to modern stories, there’s a great mix of sisters taking over the West End right now, and we are completely here for it. Here are some of our favourite West End sisters.

Wicked – Elphaba and Nessarose

Wicked

When you think of Wicked you automatically think of the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, but the show features a special relationship between Elphaba and her sister Nessarose. Although they may argue we see how much ‘Nessa’ means to the Wicked Witch Of The West by her cherishing of the ruby slippers. A two-time winner of the Olivier Audience Award, Wicked is now the 9th longest running musical in West End history. The new cast stars musical theatre royalty Lucie Jones as Elphaba and Carina Gillespie as Nessarose.

My Neighbour Totoro – Satsuki and Mei

My Neighbour Totoro

The gorgeous Japanese classic from Studio Ghibli is coming to the London stage for the very first time. The story follows sisters Satsuki and Mei, as they move into an old house. One day, Mei discovers two small spirits who lead her into the hollow of a large tree, where she meets the creature Totoro. But when Mei tries to show her sister, Totoro’s tree has mysteriously disappeared. Finally on a rainy night as they wait for the bus, their new friend Totoro appears beside them.

The show opens at the Barbican in October and has just gone on sale! Get your tickets here.

Hamilton – The Schuyler Sisters

schyuler sisters eqnqub

Let’s be honest, the Schuyler sisters steal the whole show when they do their introductory number. Smart, independent and savvy at a time when the world didn’t want women to be any of those things; Angelica, Eliza and Peggy are inspirational individually and as a family. Plus Angelica stepping aside to let her sister pursue a man she’d just fallen for at first sight? I mean, I don’t know anyone else who’s *that* good a sister!

Disney’s Frozen – Elsa and Anna

Disney s Frozen Samantha Barks Elsa Stephanie McKeon Anna Ensemble

Well, this wouldn’t be an article about West End sisters without mentioning Arendelle’s favourite princesses. Frozen took the world by (snow)storm when it came out in 2013 – placing strong female relationships centre stage. We all fell in love with the brave, mysterious Elsa and the smart, loyal Anna, and the enduring love between the two sisters.

Now, the new musical adaptation has proven to be an absolute hit for audiences of all ages. Samantha Barks and Olivier Award-nominated Stephanie McKeon are the closest thing to real life Disney princesses. A must-see.

Sister Act – Deloris and the Sisters

Sister cnqyyc

Open now at the Eventim Apollo, this show is a tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music. Deloris, the diva disguised as a nun, helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Starring West End royalty Beverley Knight as Deloris and comedy legend Jennifer Saunders as Mother Superior. Alongside an all-star cast, featuring Keala Settle, Lesley Joseph, Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe and Hairspray’s rising star Lizzie Bea.

All Singing, All Dancing: Six songs from some of our favourite musicals  https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/six-songs-from-some-of-our-favourite-musicals/ Thu, 12 Aug 2021 15:28:53 +0000 http://&p=111428734 Who doesn’t like musicals? From the swell of excitement in the opening song or the emotional highs of the closing curtain, a good musical is completely unmatched. Thankfully, there’s no end to the amount of amazing musicals in London in 2021. We’ve pulled together our top six songs from some of our favourite musicals along with videos so you can have a sing-along while choosing which musical to book! Go ahead, get those vocals warmed up…

River Deep, Mountain High – Tina – The Tina Musical

What better way to kick off our list than with a Tina Turner classic? Perfectly suited to the musical stage, the Tina Turner Musical setlist is packed with wall-to-wall, swinging melodies. Our favourite? The sensational River Deep, Mountain High. Featured in Glee and part of the Royal Variety Performance in 2018, this classic will make you want to get off your seat and sing more than any other song on our list. Have a sing along with the previous cast members of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical as they perform the song at the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard in the video above- it’s truly showstopping!

And You Don’t Even Know It – Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

If you haven’t seen Everybody’s Talking About Jamie we’re guessing you’ve probably been living under a rock for the last few years. First performed in 2017, ‘And You Don’t Even Know It’ is the stand out song of this totally unique and inspirational musical. With the line ‘I’m a superstar and you don’t even know it’, Jamie speaks for all those kids with dreams of becoming a superstar.

Defying Gravity – Wicked

We’ll be honest, there’s way too many incredible Wicked songs to pick just one. But this time, we’ll go for the Act One closer ‘Defying Gravity’. A back and forth between Elphaba and Glinda, the classic song is one of the many high points of Wicked: The Musical. Throughout the song, each witch begs the other to change their course, with the tune ending with both characters parting ways and the citizens of Oz joining in with the chorus. If you haven’t belted this one out while making breakfast – you’re missing out.

I Believe – The Book of Mormon

The cast of The Book Of Mormon London, now playing at the Prince Of Wales Theatre (Photo: Johan Persson)

A stirring ballad if ever there was one, ‘I Believe’ from the hit musical The Book of Mormon is the perfect example of why musicals are amazing. In this classic song, the Mormon missionary sings to convince himself to commit to his religion and carry out his duties. Written by the creators of South Park, it’s no surprise that the whole song and musical is sprinkled with hilarious lines. Our favourite? ‘A warlord who shoots people in the face, what’s so scary about that?’ Keep an eye out on dates for The Book of Mormon in London in 2021.

You Will Be Found – Dear Evan Hansen

If a tear isn’t falling down your cheek to ‘You Will Be Found’ from the musical Dear Evan Hansen, you’ve got a heart of stone. As the final song of Act One, ‘You Will Be Found’ tracks the growth of Evan’s viral speech online. If you’ve ever felt as if you haven’t fit into your workplace or school, this beautiful song is one of many in Dear Evan Hansen that will give you inspiration by the bucketload. There’s no doubt that this emotional ballad has already made its way into the Musical Hall of Fame.

Do You Hear the People Sing? – Les Misérables

Could we end our list with anything else? ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’ is as rousing a song as you could find in any musical. Sung at the climax of the masterpiece Les Miserables musical, ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’ perfectly condenses all that the story stands for into one incredible song.

So, there you have it – our top six favourite musical performances! If you’re as big a fan of musicals as us, make sure to check the Official London Theatre listings and snap up your tickets for 2021 before it’s too late.

The Comeback returns to the Noël Coward Theatre for a limited 3-week run in July

Ben Ashenden and Alex Owen (Photo credit: Marc Brenner)

The Comeback is the debut play from The Pin’s award-winning Ben Ashenden and Alex Owen. Its mix of hilarity, emotional heart and irresistible charm offers the perfect escapism for audiences of all ages. The Comeback first opened to rave reviews in December 2020, before being shut down after just 9 performances due to the government-enforced national lockdown. Now, the producers and creative team are delighted to bring back The Comeback for a limited 3-week run at the Noël Coward Theatre this July.

The Comeback, tells the story of two double acts fighting to wrest control of the most chaotic, farcical and high-stakes gig of their respective careers. Directed by Emily Burns, The Comeback promises to bring heart-warming joy and laughter to the Noël Coward Theatre this summer.

Up-and-coming comics Alex and Ben have been booked in the warm-up spot for a beloved but fading double act’s comeback tour. Neither duo is delighted to be playing to a sparse crowd in a sleepy, seaside town, but when it’s revealed that a Hollywood director is in the audience, both acts glimpse a final chance for their big break. Cue sabotage, mistaken identity and full on farcical mayhem, as the performance descends into a desperate battle for the limelight. With the action alternating between offstage and on, and the tone between Noises Off and Morecambe and Wise’s old-school charm, this is a warm-hearted, joyful, and dazzlingly funny new comedy.

Each night Ashenden and Owen will be joined on stage by a surprise celebrity guest star playing a cameo role in the production.

The production will be staged in a Covid safe environment following current government advice, with audiences adhering to social distancing guidelines; and in line with Society of London Theatre’s See It Safely campaign.

Tickets will be available right here on Official London Theatre on 30 April, so mark your diaries and be sure to check back on our Theatre Tickets page.

Wicked returns to Apollo Victoria Theatre from September https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/wicked-returns-apollo-victoria-september/ Mon, 26 Apr 2021 09:13:11 +0000 http://&p=111426748 Wicked, the West End and Broadway musical phenomenon that tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, will return to London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre later this year, with performances resuming on Wednesday 15 September 2021.

Tickets for this booking period will be available to book on Official London Theatre from 17 May so be sure to mark your diaries!

Wicked will mark its 15th anniversary at the Apollo Victoria Theatre later in the year and will host a celebratory performance on Tuesday 28 September 2021.

The music and lyrics in Wicked are by the legendary composer Stephen Schwartz (whose enduringly popular musical Godspell celebrates its 50th Anniversary on 17 May 2021), with a book by Winnie Holzman (creator of the landmark American television series My So-Called Life). It is based on Gregory Maguire’s multi-million-copy bestseller, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The American author wrote his novel whilst resident in London in 1990. Against the backdrop of the emergent Gulf War, Maguire’s story began to take shape as he examined the fundamental nature of good vs evil – exploring how the impact of politics, history and circumstance came to affect the choices – and stories – of the characters we believed we knew so well.

The first of the four novels in the ‘Wicked Years’ series (and Maguire’s first novel for adults) challenged readers to look at the beloved ‘Wizard of Oz’ tale again and consider that all may not be as it first seems. Now firmly established as a commentary on our times, a special 25th Anniversary commemorative edition was published last October in a time of pandemic and divisive politics, both in the UK and USA, with an updated Afterword from the writer.

Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West said today:

“While my novel is a quarter-century old, it has proven to be able to fly the distance. Every time Elphaba’s story is read – or seen on stage – or sung – something can change within us. Since no day dawns free of heartache, a story about facing down the dragons outside and inside one’s self remains timely. The costs of courage are steep – and worth paying”.

Wicked imagines a beguiling backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum’s beloved characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and reveals the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely university friends on their journey to becoming Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Soon to celebrate its 15th Anniversary in the West End, the iconic musical has already been seen by over 10 million people in London alone and played almost 6000 performances. Winner of over 100 major international awards, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy Award and ten theatregoer-voted WhatsOnStage Awards (including three for ‘Best West End Show’), Wicked is already the 9th longest-running West End musical of all time.

Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK) of Wicked said today:

“Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s wondrous musical version of Gregory Maguire’s darkly brilliant fable is an allegory for, and of, our times. After the challenging year faced by everyone in our company, we are grateful to them for their resilience and patience and delighted that we can at last get back to telling this extraordinary story again. We look forward to audiences returning to Oz and to creating more unforgettable memories for everyone.”

The huge and enduring success of Wicked in London has seen the musical become a fundamental component in the cultural ecology of Victoria, playing a pivotal role in the health of the area’s leisure and hospitality landscape. Wicked draws in audiences from across the UK (as well as internationally) and helps to ensure Victoria remains an outstanding cultural destination.

Today, news of the musical’s return is enthusiastically welcomed by the Victoria Business Improvement District (BID). Ruth Duston OBE, OC, Chief Executive of the Victoria BID said:

“This is more good news for London and signals how life is gradually returning to Victoria after many months of lockdown. By the summer, we can expect more workers to be returning to offices, and it is vital that our rich cultural, hospitality and retail offering is thriving and ready to welcome people back. Wicked is an iconic fixture in Victoria, and the reopening plans announced today will further galvanise both the economic renaissance and vibrancy of the area”.

Through its For Good charitable programme, the production’s fundraising endeavours have to date resulted in the planting of over 50,000 new trees at the Woodland Trust’s Heartwood Forest, now England’s largest continuous new native forest. Long-standing collaborations with the Anti-Bullying Alliance and the National Literacy Trust are also set to continue.

The full cast will be confirmed at a later date.

Wicked has music and lyrics by multi-Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, The Prince of Egypt; Disney’s Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Enchanted) and is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire and adapted for the stage by Winnie Holzman. Musical staging is by Tony Award-winner Wayne Cilento with direction by two-time Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello.

Hold tight as tickets will be on sale right here on Official London Theatre from 17 May!

The ‘best’ bad guys in theatre https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/the-best-bad-guys-in-theatre/ Wed, 31 Mar 2021 13:56:19 +0000 http://&p=111426471 Whether it’s Simba and Scar or Agatha Trunchbull and Matilda, every hero needs a villain. With their outrageous musical numbers and scheming plots, despicable villains are a big part of why we love theatre. We’ve got together some of the bad guys we love to hate in the world of theatre.

Madame Morrible

Has there ever been a more horrible professor than Madame Morrible? As the headmistress of Shiz University’s Crage Hall in the box office smash Wicked, Madame Morrible is up there as one of the most loathsome villains in musical theatre. Conjuring cyclones and tricking students, thankfully Madame Morrible gets her just desserts at the end of the production as she’s marched to prison. If you haven’t seen this villain in the flesh – it’s time to book your tickets!

Scar

Any ‘90s kid will resonate with the fear felt when Scar popped up on the screen, and there’s no doubt that the theatre production of The Lion King has matched the legacy of the film. Based loosely on the plot of Hamlet, Scar is the archetypal bad guy. With his conniving manipulation and disregard for life, Scar lives up to expectations on the big stage as one of the most despicable villains around. If you haven’t had a chance to see the production yet, make sure to book your tickets to see Disney’s The Lion King in the West End.

Agatha Trunchbull

Matilda The Musical at Cambridge Theatre (Photo: Manuel Harlan)
Matilda The Musical at Cambridge Theatre (Photo by Manuel Harlan)

While we’re on the subject of horrible teachers, Agatha Trunchbull in Matilda the Musical is up there as one of the worst. This wicked antagonist was inspired by a ‘mean and loathsome woman’ from Roald Dahl’s childhood named Mrs Pratchett and has been scaring kids for decades. With a pathological hatred for pigtails and disgust for children, Miss Trunchbull is an example of a villain written perfectly for the stage.

The Woman in Black

Mark Hawkins in The Woman In Black (Photo: Tristram Kenton)

We couldn’t create a list of the ‘best’ bad guys in theatre without mentioning this spooky, unsettling and downright terrifying ghost. Written for the stage in 1987, The Woman in Black is a good old-fashioned ghost story that will test your nerves to the limit. The frightening but stunning set and character design of The Woman in Black theatre production is the perfect foundation for one of the most terrifying antagonists in any play.

Ramses

The Prince of Egypt‘s Pharaoh Ramses is certainly a compelling villain. His pride and ambition to overshadow his father’s rule is inexplicably selfish as this comes at the expenses of other’s livelihoods. These traits, combined with his pure stubbornness, makes Ramses easily one of the top villains we to love to hate in theatre.

Fun, fiendish and frightening, villains are a huge part of why we love theatre. From one of Roald Dahl’s most evil villains in Matilda The Musical to the spectacle of Scar in The Lion King, the theatre is packed with a variety of top tier villains.

Around the world in 5 theatres https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/around-the-world-in-5-theatres/ Thu, 25 Mar 2021 15:17:38 +0000 http://&p=111426474 Theatre is amazing for so many reasons. It provides an escape from the every humdrum, it gives us an opportunity to learn about different people, culture and history and it also helps us to connect with people in so many different ways. For those reasons (and plenty more!), theatres are famed around the world.

From the Sydney and Cambodia to Vietnam and New York, I’ll be sharing memories from shows I have seen around the world and those that I am looking forward to seeing in the West End this year. Grab a cuppa and settle in for a trip around the world in theatres.

New York, U.S.A

When I moved to New York in 2011, one of the things I felt most excited about was experiencing the bright lights and glitz and glam of the world-famous Broadway.

Consisting of 41 professional theatres, each with 500 seats or more, and located in the Theatre District and the Lincoln Centre along Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, you can only imagine the array of productions that are on offer for theatre fans; it’s utter heaven!

My first show on Broadway was Wicked at the iconic Gershwin Theatre. Named after brothers George Gershwin, a composer, and Ira Gershwin, a lyricist, it has the largest seating capacity of any Broadway theatre with 1,933 seats and hosts large musical productions.

The venue, which has been home to the Tony and Olivier Award-winning blockbuster musical Wicked since October 2003, previously served as a concert hall for a number of legendary jazz and pop music performers. It was also home to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hugely popular musical Starlight Express in 1987.

I remember being shown to my seat at the performance and feeling those familiar goosebumps as the curtain was raised. The smash-hit musical tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz and transports you to a place far, far away. From the stunning set design and costumes to the magical soundtrack and incredible storyline, Wicked is a pure spectacle and an absolute treat for my first show on Broadway! Lucky for us, Wicked is also playing in the West End, click here to grab your tickets.

If I wasn’t already hooked to theatre, I definitely was after that experience. From Jersey Boys and Wicked to Stomp and Chicago, I feel extremely grateful to have enjoyed some great theatre both on and off Broadway and can’t wait to see more when I next travel there.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

One of the things I love the most about travel is the opportunity to learn about different cultures and history, so before I set off on my trip to Siem Reap, I did some research to find out how I could embrace the Cambodian culture. It was clear, very quickly, that Phare, the Cambodian Circus was a must-see for first-time visitors.

While on first impressions it presents itself as a circus, Phare is so much more than that. It combines music, theatre, dance and modern circus to share a variety of historical, folk and modern Cambodian stories. Featuring original music, breathtaking theatre and some jaw-dropping circus acts, I was truly blown away by the experience.

Opening in 2013, Phare is a fairly new concept and puts on a professional show under a 330-person big top all year round. From the minute you enter the big top, you’ll be swept away by the energy, emotion and talent presented on stage.

And at the end of the performances, there is ample time to meet the amazing artists, to ask questions and to take group photos. I learnt that they were students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak‘s (PPSA) vocational training centre. Founded in 1994, PPSA offers students and graduates a place to build their skills and an opportunity to earn a reliable income, meaning they will not face poverty. Not only does Phare boost the arts sector in Cambodia, it also allows individuals to grow professionally with freedom and confidence.

Seen by over one hundred thousand people and with almost 75% of the profits going back into training students in PPSA, Phare, the Cambodian Circus is not only a unique theatre experience but also gives back to the society, and that makes the whole experience extra special.

Sydney, Australia

When it comes to performing arts venues, the Sydney Opera House is definitely up there as one of the world’s most famous. Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973, the multi-performance venue is visited by more than 10.9 million people every year. Not only is it one of the most iconic theatres in the world, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

On my trip to Sydney in 2017, I booked tickets to see All You Need Is Love, a show presenting a number of Beatles masterpieces and although it wasn’t theatre as such, experiencing the iconic Concert Hall was a theatre lovers dream come true!

Over the years, the Opera House has staged a number of leading international productions including Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights and West End hit pop musical SIX and has many in the works for 2021 including the Olivier Award-winning Home, I’m Darling and American Psycho: The Musical.

Hanoi, Vietnam

Hanoi Water Puppet show shcpco

When you think of Vietnam, what instantly comes to mind is delicious food, secluded beaches, bustling cities and of course, loads of history! And where there’s history, there is also art.

On my trip to Hanoi a few years ago, I learnt about a traditional water puppet show which dates back to the 11th century. The traditional art form was created in a time when villagers invented their own entertainment by standing waist-deep in the flooded rice paddy fields and used large rods to support puppets so that they appeared to be moving over the water.

Though the puppet show can be seen on stages all over the world, its a unique experience to see the performance in the original location at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi. Performed in a pool of water, the puppets are controlled by around eight puppeteers hidden behind a screen.

The short sketches tell Vietnamese folk tales and legends as well as giving audiences an insight into day to day ancient village life, agriculture harvest and dances of magical mythical creatures. The performances are accompanied by traditional music with drums, horns, cymbals, operatics and bamboo flutes played by a Vietnamese orchestra.

There are plenty of moments of hilarity in this traditional show and along with the impressive puppetry, is a great way to learn more about Vietnamese culture and its history.

London, U.K

The West End company in Come From Away at the Phoenix Theatre 2020. Credit Craig Sugden
Having worked in London for several years, visits to the theatre with friends after work and weekend matinee dates with my partner were always regular events but it was only when I moved to Hong Kong that I realised how lucky I was to have theatre so readily available in London.

Upon moving back home, I immediately booked tickets to see 9 to 5 The Musical, Waitress, Only Fools and Horses and many more, within the first few months alone! I had a lot of catching up to do.

The last show that I saw was Come From Away which took me on a real emotional rollercoaster. There was happiness, there were tears and a whole lot of stomping my feet! It tells the incredible real life story of 7,000 air passengers that were grounded in Canada after 9/11. To see how the people of Gander rallied together to welcome the ‘Come From Aways’ is truly heartwarming.

The four time Olivier Award-winning show plays at the Phoenix Theatre which is one of my favourites because of its deep history. Built in 1930, the Phoenix Theatre is highly devoted to the works of English playwright, Noel Coward and opened with the premiere of his comedy Private Lives. In 1969, his 70th birthday was celebrated and the foyer bar was renamed The Noel Coward Bar.

Just as I felt I had a lot of catching up to do when I returned home from Hong Kong, I feel a similar sentiment with theatres being closed for the most part of the last year. It’s been too long since I was sat in those red velvet seats but luckily the wait won’t be much longer as we have a number of shows reopening in the coming months.

From brand new shows to the reopening of West End classics, here’s a list of the shows I’m most looking forward to seeing in London this year:

Jersey Boys

Having seen this classic once in New York and twice in the West End, I’ve got to admit it’s one of my all time faves. The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show explores the true story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and is packed with their famous hits. From Beggin’ and Sherry to Bye Bye Baby and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You (which I love so much, I chose it for my first dance at my wedding!), there are so many showstoppers that’ll have you up on your feet and singing your heart out. And after the year we’ve all had, that’s just the medicine we need.

Six

Six is the British musical that everyone’s losing their heads over and I can’t wait to see it! I love a bit of female empowerment in musical theatre, so when I heard about a modern musical that sees the wives of Henry VIII sharing their stories in the form of pop songs, I was pretty much convinced. The playlist has also gotten me through many dull days, so ladies and gents, if you need a little girl power in your life, or even a history lesson in the form of a musical, add this one to your list!

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

When I first read about Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, I knew I’d love it. Not only is the story incredibly inspiring, sassy and full of pure fabulousness, the soundtrack is one that you just can’t get out of your head (in a good way!) I left the theatre feeling happy, energised and ready to take on the world, so if you’re looking for a feel-good pick-me-up, this magical show is well worth a watch.

Hairspray

Have you sensed a little theme yet? 🙂 After the challenging times we have all faced in the past year, feel-good musicals is just what I need!

Hairspray is a classic movie-turned-musical that speaks to my soul! The story of a teenage girl who wants to make it on the local TV dance show, win the heart of teen heartthrob Link Larkin and bring everyone together? It ticks all the boxes.

Just listening to Lizzie Bea sing Good Morning Baltimore gives me goosebumps and with Michael Ball, Paul Merton and Marisha Wallace starring in the show, I don’t need any more convincing.

If like me, you’re missing theatre and can’t wait to be back in those red velvet seats, check out our roundup of shows to see in 2021 and get your tickets booked so you can have something to look forward to as soon as those doors open.

Matinees to catch with the kids this half term https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/111420233-2/ Wed, 23 Oct 2019 13:43:29 +0000 http://&p=111420233 It’s that time of year… the nights are closing in, the leaves are turning brown, and the kids are running around the house bored because it’s half term.

If you’re struggling with things to keep them occupied then never fear, we’ve popped together a list of some of the fantastic matinee shows around London that you and your family can all enjoy. Some of them have even put on extra daytime performances especially for half term!

Matilda The Musical

While children who grew up reading the 1988 book and the watching the 1996 movie have left childhood long behind, the story still holds a special place in many people’s hearts. Tim Minchin’s musical adaptation of Matilda is written with love and warmth and a whole load of humour. With hilarious songs, mind-bending sets and an incredible child cast, you’ll all be trying to move the programme with your mind the whole way home.

Matilda The Musical has performances at the Cambridge Theatre on 2pm on Thursdays, 2.30pm on Saturdays and 3pm on Sundays. They’ve put on an extra half term performance at 2pm on Thursday 24 October, and suggest the show is suitable for children 6 and over.

War Horse

The National Theatre’s globe-trotting production of War Horse has returned to London at the new Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. Featuring incredible puppets with movement so lifelike you’ll genuinely forget they’re not real, this production will totally transport you into another world. If you haven’t seen it yet, now is the perfect opportunity for the whole family – and it’s only on at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre until 23 November!

War Horse has daytime performances at 2pm on Saturdays and Thursdays and is suitable for children 10+.

Wicked

A two-time winner of the Olivier Audience Award, Wicked is one of the most beloved musicals all over the world. The musical is set before the Wizard Of Oz, unfolding the untold story of an unlikely  friendship between two girls at boarding school: the blonde, popular Glinda, and the misunderstood, shy, green Elphaba. With beautiful costumes and set design mixed in with impressive musical and dance numbers, Wicked is a colourful and exciting theatre experience for all ages.

Wicked is suitable for ages 7+ and has a matinee performance at the Apollo Victoria at 2.30pm every Wednesday and Sunday as well as an extra half term performance on Thursday 24 October.

Big The Musical

Big The Musical finishes at the Dominion Theatre on 2 November, so this is your last chance to see Jay McGuinness, Kimberly Walsh, Wendi Peters and Matthew Kelly dancing and singing their hearts out on stage together. A heartwarming story of a young boy who wishes he could be grown up and has to muddle through adult life when his wish comes true, Big The Musical will delight children and parents alike.

There are matinees of Big on Thursday and Saturday this week (23 & 26 Oct) and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday next week (29 & 31 Oct and 2 Nov). There is a minimum age of admission of 5.

School Of Rock – The Musical

Teach your kids to Stick It To The Man this half term with the rock-hit wonder School Of Rock – The Musical. With all the songs from the original film as well as 14 new original songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Glenn Slater, your whole family will be humming the tunes all the way home. Featuring incredible pint-sized musicians (all the kids play their own instruments) and Noel Sullivan as fake substitute teacher Dewey Finn your kids will be begging to learn the drums by the interval.

While the show is recommended for ages 5+, it does contain occasional strong language and may not be suitable for very young children. School Of Rock performs matinees at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2.30pm and Sundays at 3pm.

Witchy West End sensation Wicked welcomed their 10 millionth visitor last night! (Try saying that ten times quickly!) I’m sure you’ll all go green with jealousy when you hear that the lucky theatregoer was invited to celebrate with the cast after the performance.

Not only that, but Geeta Ozdural (no we’re not making it up, she actually has Oz in her name) brought her theatregoing companion with her to meet Nikki Bentley, Helen Woolf and the rest of the cast – who just happened to be her cousin Lopa Shah, who was visiting from the USA in their first Reunion in a decade.
