The Phantom Of The Opera

Winner of 70 major theatre awards and seen by more than 140 million people, The Phantom Of The Opera continues to mesmerise audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre and around the world.

Based on Gaston Leroux’s gothic novel of life beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House, the story tells the tale of Phantom – a man ashamed of his physical appearance – who hides from the real world in the darkness of the theatre. Haunting the opera house and feared by all, he manipulates the actors and crew. But when he falls in love with a chorus girl whose old friend returns to rescue her, will he get his revenge?

In one of the most successful theatre productions of all time, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerising score combines flawlessly with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, bringing this tragic love story to life.

School Of Rock – The Musical

Dewey Finn is a down-on-his-luck wannabe rock star struggling to make ends meet and determined to do so through the power of music. Posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school, Finn discovers his students’ hidden musical talents, and opts to enlist his fifth-graders in a quest to conquer The Battle Of The Bands – but can he do so without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation School Of Rock – The Musical has been leaving audiences rocking night after night at the Gillian Lynne Theatre since its West End premier in 2016. But with it’s final performance on the 1st March, the New Year Sale is just another excuse to snap up some tickets before it closes.

Written by Agatha Christie, The Mousetrap is one of the most famous whodunnits in the world, having been enjoyed by London theatregoers since 25th November 1952. Don’t miss your chance to buy New Year Sale tickets to see this iconic play at St. Martins Theatre

The Play That Goes Wrong

Mischief Theatre’s hugely successful chaotic comedy tale must be doing something right having won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 2015 and now playing at the Duchess Theatre and more theatres across the globe.

Follow the antics of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society who are trying their  best to stage a production of a 1920s murder mystery. But as the show’s title might suggest, this is not as easy as it sounds, with everything that can go wrong… well, doing just that. Watch out for collapsing sets, forgotten lines, broken fourth walls, absent props and unfortunate injuries aplenty.

Now stumbling through its sixth catastrophic year, The Play That Goes Wrong is guaranteed to leave your face aching with laughter!

London Theatre News Today: Friday 10 January https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/london-theatre-news-today-friday-10-january/ Fri, 10 Jan 2020 12:13:27 +0000 http://&p=111421280 Today it was announced that School Of Rock will be closing on 1 March 2020 ending its Olivier Award-winning run to make space for something new from the king of the West End.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s highly-anticipated Cinderella will be coming to London, stepping into the shoes of the hit musical at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in September this year. Before the opening, the venue will undergo a seat upgrade and further refurbishments.

The brand-new show is a complete reinvention of the classic fairytale based on an original idea from the Emmy Award-nominated writer of Killing Eve, Emerald Fennell.

Ian Hughes to step in to Les Miserables

After gallantly stepping into the role of Thénardier in the new production of Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre, Matt Lucas has sadly had to take his final bow after sustaining a back injury. He took the role after Gerard Carey was unable to perform due to a vocal injury caused by contracting pneumonia.

But the show must go on and Ian Hughes will slip into the role from today (Friday 10 January) until the end of February when Gerard Carey is expected to return to the role as originally announced. Ian recently starred in the current sell-out UK and International tour of Les Mis so the role is in very good hands.

Hello, Dolly!

Star power is the name of the game for Hello, Dolly! which today announced that Andy Nyman and Jenna Russell will be joining the legendary Imelda Staunton in the upcoming production at the Adelphi Theatre.

Andy Nyman – who will play Horace Vandergelder – recently starred in the critically acclaimed Fiddler On The Roof. He also penned the West End fave Ghost Stories and won an Olivier Award in 2006 for Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Olivier Award-winner Jenna Russell will play Irene Molloy. Jenna’s prolific career includes the sold-out Fun Home at the Young Vic, Merrily We Go Along, and her award-winning performance in Sunday In The Park With George at the Menier Chocolate Factory (a performance she later reprised on Broadway).

They join Jenna Boyd (Beulah and others), Mary Doherty (Bonnie and others), Mark Dugdale (taking over the roles of Kevin T/Garth and others), Jonathan Andrew Hume (Kevin J/Ali and others), Harry Morrison (Oz and others), Emma Salvo (Janice and others), Cat Simmons (Hannah and others) and Chiara Baronti, Alexander McMorran and Jennifer Tierney.

Alice Fearn will be replacing Rachel Tucker who also found fame while playing Elphaba on the West End.

Jodie Steele, Carrie Hope Fletcher, T'Shan Williams and Sophie Isaacs in Heathers The Musical

Dear Diary, today the winner of The Curtain Up Show‘s Best Cast Recordings 2019 was revealed. The winner? Heathers The Musical!

With 25,000 public votes, 2019’s best London, Broadway and Solo recordings were decided. Taking home the West End win was the stage adaptation of the 1980s cult film which featured starlet Carrie Hope Fletcher and Jamie Muscato. The announcement comes just months ahead of Heathers’ UK tour which kicks off in May.

Moulin Rouge! took the title for Best Broadway and John Owen-Jones’ sixth studio album, Spotlight, scooped Best Solo Album.

The Broadway win bodes well for the upcoming production of the film-to-stage show Moulin Rouge which is set to open at Piccadilly Theatre next year. Oh, la, la!

On 22 January, Thriller Live will be turning 11. To celebrate its birthday, the Michael Jackson tribute show will be hosting its first-ever singalong performance.

For one night only, audience members will be invited to join the cast in chorus as they perform the MJ and Jackson Five classics. Sadly, you won’t be invited to moonwalk onto the stage but fans will have the freedom to hum, sing or yell along to their favourite hits without their seat neighbour clearing their throat, elbowing them or calling an usher for assistance.

A spokesperson said: “MJ wrote some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century and they mean so much to fans of Thriller Live who have celebrated them at over 4,000 West End performances to date. For many, the temptation to join in with the show’s catchy hits including ‘I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’, ‘Rock With You’ ‘Can You Feel It’, ‘PYT’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Man In The Mirror’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Thriller’,‘Bad’ and ‘Black or White’ can be almost unbearable. Our Singalong night will be a celebration of that and a chance for our energetic, passionate audiences to be a step closer to our talented cast. This unique performance promises to be a night at the theatre, a party and a rock concert all in one!”

Are you the next star of Thriller Live? https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/thriller-live-next-star/ Thu, 29 Aug 2019 16:08:10 +0000 http://&p=111419363 The producers of Thriller Live have made an open casting call for singers to join the record-breaking London production and for the upcoming 2019/20 World Tour.

Thriller Live places very specific vocal demands on its five lead singers. The performers in Thriller Live come from many different backgrounds – often performers are from the music industry and not just traditionally theatre or musical backgrounds – and they can sometimes be difficult to reach. So they have now decided to launch a nationwide appeal for singers who think they have the vocal style \and charisma to take on performing some of pop’s greatest hits.

Thriller Live at the Lyric Theatre - Book tickets today

So what exactly is the Thriller Live team looking for? Well, they’re searching for male and female lead singers and male child performers (age 9-14).

Thriller Live Musical Supervisor John Maher says: “We are looking for singers to come in to audition to sing in their own voice, and not try to impersonate Michael. But we do look for people who ‘get’ MJ’s style, and can capture some elements of his incredible phrasing. Phrasing is a very personal thing though, and MJ’s was particularly idiosyncratic. So no-one will ever get all of it. But that’s a good thing – if you could imitate his phrasing perfectly you’d be the world’s best MJ impersonator. You’d never be out of work, but it wouldn’t be with us.

“Michael Jackson had an extraordinary vocal range. We do the bulk of the show in Michael’s original keys, so the vocal range alone rules out perhaps 95% of the male candidates, and a surprising proportion of the female ones. But what set MJ apart as a vocalist even more than his remarkable range, in my opinion, was the incredible rhythmic feel of his vocals. This was true even when he was a young child, as he had a groove any great drummer or bassist would be proud of. Every now and again, someone comes in who is vocally brilliant and so obviously right for the show, they sail through the audition process and win the entire panel over in almost no time.”

thriller live past acts uznsyo

Over the past 10 years some amazingly talented singers had their early theatre career breaks in Thriller Live including:

Layton Williams

Layton Williams on the red carpet at the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard (Photo: Pamela Raith)

One of the original four young Michael Jacksons in the West End, Layton is now playing the leading role of Jamie in the latest West End sensation Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, right next door at the Apollo Theatre.

Kieran Alleyne

He was the opening night young MJ in the West End, and is now the show’s lead MJ dancer and vocalist on tour.

Shaheen Jafargholi

Another early young MJ, who sang at Michael Jackson’s funeral service to a TV audience of hundreds of millions, has just finished a long run as a featured character in EastEnders.

Ben Forster

m7zqrq3zc2poddl2s0ol

Ben began his West End career as a leading man in Thriller Live, and went on to win Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Superstar” talent show. Winning the lead role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, he starred alongside Spice Girls’ Mel C as Mary Magdalene for two years around the world. He then took the leading role in Elf – The Musical, and then the coveted Phantom in Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera in the West End.

Denise Pearson

The former lead singer with British pop/R&B group, Five Star, Denise was the first female lead singer when Thriller Live opened in the West End in 2009. City Life magazine described her as “uncannily pitch-perfect as a female answer to MJ”.

Cleopatra Higgins

Former lead singer of the British R&B/soul/pop sister act, Cleopatra, she joined Thriller Live after reaching the semi-finals of The Voice as one of Will.i.am’s acts.

Thriller Live Director/Choreographer Gary Lloyd in his upcoming book says: “The voice is King. Quite simply, if they cannot hit the notes or show signs that with a little vocal wizardry you can find your way around a certain part, there is very little point pursuing the audition process. Once we find that voice, there must be some understanding and connection to the way MJ and the Jacksons sing that material.”

“We rehearse them on the phrasing and their vocal delivery and once they have passed that test, they have to be able to back it up with some performance dynamics. Sounds obvious but quite often we have found the most incredible voices belonging to session singers, who also look fantastic but are not used to being out front or sometimes seen by an audience at all.”

So, if you think you’ve got what it takes to impress the Thriller Live team, contact the Casting Director Debbie O’Brien on thriller@debbieobrien.net.

Shows for teenagers in Kids Week https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/shows-for-teenagers-in-kids-week/ Tue, 30 Jul 2019 09:48:13 +0000 http://&p=111419023 Kids Week is all about making theatre accessible for young people, whether they’re teeny tiny in age, or in the not-so teeny tiny teenage years.

That’s why, during August, participating shows are offering free tickets to any child aged 16 and under when they’re accompanied by a full-paying adult. Adults can also buy up to two extra children’s tickets at half price and there are no booking fees.

And there’s plenty of shows for teenagers in this year’s Kids Week. Here are the shows that are perfect for the slightly older children in the family.

9 To 5 The Musical

Caroline Sheen, Amber Davies and Natalie McQueen in 9 To 5 The Musical

Age recommendation: 12+

While your teens may not be aware of the cult-hit film which this musical is based on, that won’t stop them from enjoying a cup of ambition and the tunes of Dolly Parton.

The musical is all about three workmates, Violet (played by Caroline Sheen), Judy and Doralee. They’ve had enough of their narcissistic, sexist boss (played by Brian Conely), and so plot to get rid of him. But when the new CEO unexpectedly arrives, things begin to unravel.

In the show, there are some familiar faces that your teen may recognise, including Love Island’s Amber Davies as Judy and Natalie McQueen (Kinky Boots) as Doralee Rhodes.

Barber Shop Chronicles

Barber Shop Chronicles at the National Theatre

Age recommendation: 12+

Barber shops are great places for sources of gossip, laughter and a good ole catch-up, and if you’re the writers of this production, it provides enough inspiration for an entire show.

A mix of comedy and drama, the Barber Shop Chronicles delves into the stories of characters across the globe as they sit down in the barber’s chair and share their lives.  Running at The Roundhouse, teens will be transported to barber shops across the world, from London to Johannesburg, Harare to Kampala, and Lagos to Accra.

Directed by Olivier award-winning Bijan Sheibani and designed by Rae Smith (War Horse), this is a heart-warming, hilarious and insightful new play that’s ideal for teens.

Barber Shop Chronicles is also running an activity during Kids Week. The show’s Associate Director is running a workshop on 8 August, which will explore themes within the show and improvise scenes over the course of an hour. More information can be found on the Kids Week website.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

Age recommendation: 11+

The first major stage adaptation of the best-selling book, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin is a love story set during the Second World War.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the novel’s publication, the story revolves around the residents of Cephallonia, as they face warfare on their idyllic island. The story has several narratives, including Carlo, an Italian soldier, falling in love whilst fighting in Albania, Iannis and his daughter Pelagia, and of course, the young Captain Corelli and his passion for music.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin is also running an activity during Kids Week. After the show ends, one of the show’s actors, (Luisa Guerreiro, who plays Goat) will take part in a short Q&A followed by a backstage tour. More information can be found here.

Equus

Ethan Kai as Alan Strang in Equus

Age suitability: 14+

An award-winning psychological thriller that’s inspired by a true story, Equus is one of the new shows in this year’s Kids Week.

The narrative centres on teenager Alan Strang, whose pathological fascination leads him to blind six horses. When his psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart is tasked with uncovering the motive, he delves into Alan’s world of twisted spirituality, passion and sexuality, and questions his own sanity and motivations.

Revived in a bold new production, the story explores the complex relationships between devotion, myth and sexuality.

After the performance on Monday 19th August, there will be a post-show Q&A with the Associate Director and members of the cast. To attend, book Equus’ activity on the Kids Week website.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

It can be difficult being a teenager, and nobody knows that better than Jamie New in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. At sixteen years old, Jamie wants two things; to become a drag queen and wear a dress to prom.

But there are walls in his head, bullies to defeat and difficult family relationships to manoeuvre with his dreams. But with the help of his mum, her best friend Ray, and new mentor Hugo / Loco Chanel, Jamie could be closer to reaching his dreams than he realises. The show stars Layton Williams (Bad Education) as Jamie, Faye Tozer (Steps) as his teacher, Miss Hedge, and Bill Ward (Coronation Street) as Hugo / Loco Chanel.

Based on an incredible true story, this Olivier Award-nominated show is about to embark on a UK tour and be made into a film starring Richard E Grant.

Here’s their most recent performance at West End LIVE to give you a taste of what to expect:

The Girl On The Train

Age suitability: 12+

A stage version of the successful book, The Girl On The Train is a classic whodunnit with a thriller element thrown in for good measure.

Starring Samantha Womack (Eastenders) in the lead role, the story is about Rachel Watson, a commuter who can’t stop watching a happy couple through their window on her train ride to work. But when the woman in the couple mysteriously disappears, Rachel begins to investigate what happened, and faces becoming a suspect herself.

Currently on a UK tour, the show is stopping off at the Duke Of York’s Theatre for a limited run.

The Girl On The Train is also running a Q&A activity after the show on the 7 August. You can book tickets for this on the Kids Week homepage.

Thriller Live

Waitress

Marisha Wallace, Lucie Jones and Ashley Roberts in Waitress (Photo: Johan Persson)

Age suitability: 13+

Baking up a suitable show for teens is the cast of Waitress.

A stage adaptation of the popular film, you can expect a fantastic soundtrack as the score has been written by six-time Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles. Here’s a taste of the music:

The show is all about Jenna, a diner waitress stuck in an unhappy marriage. But just as she’s about to leave, she discovers she’s pregnant. But with the help of her friends and a new doctor, can Jenna still bake a recipe for her success?

The cast of this show is spectacular, as it stars Lucie Jones (X Factor) as Jenna, Ashley Roberts (Pussycat Dolls) and Marisha Wallace (Dreamgirls) as her best friends Dawn and Becky, and Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners) as Ogie.

The Woman In Black

The Woman In Black at the Fortune Theatre

Age suitability:12+

For the teens that like a good ole scare, The Woman In Black is ideal.

London theatre’s favourite ghost story, it centres on a solicitor who’s recounting his experiences several years after being sent to wind up the affairs of a recently deceased woman in an isolated house.

Starring just two actors, this eerie thriller has been in the West End for 30 years, and is still having audience members on the edge of their seats!

We have nine incredible Sunday shows you can see in London that will make any weekend great. Just see for yourself below.

The Comedy About A Bank Robbery

The Comedy About A Bank Robbery at Criterion Theatre (Photo: Robert Day)

Sunday, funday – am I right? Well, it definitely will be if you see this hilarious show from the creators of The Play That Goes Wrong.

Mischief Theatre’s The Comedy About A Bank Robbery is exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a farcical, slapstick, laugh-a-minute comedy about an attempted bank robbery. Set in 1958, an escaped convict is determined to steal a priceless diamond which has been entrusted to the Minneapolis City Bank. With the help of his screwball sidekick, trickster girlfriend, he attempts to nab the jewel – but things don’t quite go as planned.

With performances at 3pm and 7pm, you can slot this side-splitting play into any given Sunday without it messing with your weekly routine.

Disney’s The Lion King

Disney's The Lion King at Lyceum Theatre (Photo: Deen van Meer)

Forget the weekly cinema trip with the kids, take them to the theatre instead! This is the real live-action version of Disney’s classic film and the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Set in Serengeti, Disney’s The Lion King tells the story of Simba – a young lion prince. When Simba is born, the whole kingdom celebrates and his father, King Mufasa, starts to teach him how to rule the land. But his evil uncle Scar – who’s been pushed back to second in line for the throne – has different plans for the lion cub. In a bid to claim the title of king, Scar plots to kill Mufasa and Simba but things don’t go quite to plan as the young lion survives. But will Simba be able to forgive himself for his father’s death and take the role he was destined to have?

Matilda The Musical

Matilda The Musical at Cambridge Theatre (Photo: Manuel Harlan)

Add a bit of magic to your Sunday with this stage-adaptation of Roald Dahl’s much-loved tale, Matilda.

Matilda Wormwood is a child with an incredible talent for learning. Though she’s nothing like her uncaring and rather sketchy family who actively discourage her pursuit of knowledge, she excels intellectually and even discovers a rather unique talent. Using her new-found abilities, Matilda tries to teach her family and her terrifying and tyrannical headmistress a lesson – but will she get away with it?

Written by witty comedian Tim Minchin, this charming musical will teach you and your children the importance of compassion, passion and most importantly, love. Perfect Sunday viewing, no?

The Play That Goes Wrong

Remember we mentioned The Play That Goes Wrong? Well, that’s a Sunday show in London, too!

Winner of the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Mischief Theatre’s first West End production is still going strong (and wrong) today!

See am-dram group Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society attempt to put on a production of a 1920s murder mystery. But their inexperience, egos, lack of talent, and clumsiness leads to a disastrous day on set. Watch out for collapsing sets, forgotten lines, broken fourth walls, absent props and unfortunate injuries aplenty.

Rip It Up – The 60s

Rip It Up 6672 copyT jhfyh5

Sundays are for spending time with the people you love. So a show featuring some of the UK’s favourite pop stars is the perfect Sunday treat.

JLS’ Aston Merrygold, McFly’s Harry Judd, The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness and Olympic gymnast Louis Smith form the ultimate dance boy band for Rip It Up – The 60s. After each of them appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, the swoon-worthy quartet decided to celebrate the swinging decade a show full of dancing, fashion and the sounds of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Motown, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder – and more.

School Of Rock

The cast of School Of Rock The Musical

School might be the last place your or your kids might want to be on a Sunday but this is different. This is the School Of Rock! Based on the 2003 Jack Black film, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical is packed with hilarious jokes, touching moments and, of course, brilliant songs.

Wannabe rock star Dewey Finn has just been kicked out of his band. With no money and no way of entering the Battle Of The Bands contest, he takes some desperate measure and poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. He soon discovers his students are musically talented and enlists his fifth-graders to enter the competition with him. But what will their parents think?

Six

The Six queens perform Ex Wives.

Want a Sunday fit for a queen? Then head to Six where her-story is retold. Theatre-goers and critics have been losing their heads over this concert-style musical full of sass-itude. It was nominated for five Olivier Awards – including Best New Musical and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical (for the Six Queens) and due to popular demand, it keeps coming back to the West End.

Hear the story of Henry VIII’s six wives from their point-of-view as they take to the mic to tell their tales.

Thriller Live

Thriller Live at the Lyric Theatre - Book tickets today

From Queens to The King Of Pop. Thriller Live is a celebration of Michael Jackson’s music throughout the ages. From his early days with The Jackson 5 to his later work as a solo singer-songwriter.

Featuring all his big hits including ABC, Bad, Smooth Criminal, Black And White and, of course, Thriller, this is a must for all Michael Jackson fans.

Witness For The Prosecution

Who doesn’t love watching a good courtroom drama on a Sunday? With Witness Of The Prosecution, you’ll feel as though you’re part of the action thanks to its unique set.

The show takes place at London’s County Hall in an actual court. Audience members can either sit in the gallery or opt for a VIP jury seat where you’ll really feel in the thick of it.

Agatha Christie’s classic play focuses on Leonard Vole who is accused of murdering Emily French to inherit her wealth. Will he be able to convince the jury of his innocence despite a surprise witness? Can he escape the ultimate fate: the hangman’s noose?

We’re encouraged to go out and watch fireworks with the neighbours we avoid most of the year – just in time for Christmas card swapping season. But what we so conveniently forget is how cold, noisy and short firework displays are. That’s why, this year, we want to remind you that you can get your fill of sparkles and bangs with a West End show.

Enjoy the thrill of pyrotechnics with the added bonus of a brilliant story, magical costumes and a nice comfortable seat with one of the five shows below.

Disney’s Aladdin

In addition to the expected magic carpet rides, bustling streets and grand palaces, Disney’s Aladdin also has a sparkling Cave Of Wonders scene that’ll leave your jaw on the floor and you asking for more! Packed with gold (naturally), glitter and fireworks, this is one of the glitziest numbers in the West End. While the Genie sings Friend Like Me, you’ll be wondering why you ventured out into that dark field to watch 10 minutes of flashing lights.

Bat Out Of Hell The Musical

If you’re looking for pyrotechnics, Bat Out Of Hell The Musical should be your number one stop. This show is literally on fire! Throughout the show, you’ll be stunned by the special effects and the giant flames reaching from the stage. Honestly, it’ll put that bonfire you saw at the weekend to shame! Throw in some classic rock tunes you know and love and you’re on for one banging night.

Thriller Live

All the tunes from the King Of Pop plus fire, fireworks and confetti? Thriller Live is a party that will top any Guy Fawkes gathering you’ve ever encountered. Not only will you be in the warm and cosy Lyric Theatre, you’ll be able to relive all of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits and dance moves – it’s better than watching Uncle Dave trying to do the Moonwalk after a few too many, don’t you think?

Tina – The Tina Turner Musical

Okay. This one’s a bit of a cheat as real fireworks aren’t used but, with the giant songs of Tina Turner sung live on stage with some sparkly effects, you’re really in for one hell of a display.

There are plenty of other shows that feature special effects that will up the atmosphere – and they’ll be pretty entertaining, too. Find a show that’ll get your blood pumping, here.

Where are they now? 10 child stars of the West End https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/where-are-they-now-the-child-stars-of-the-west-end/ Wed, 24 Oct 2018 14:03:00 +0000 http://&p=111414422 So many talented young people work in the West End. For many, it’s a springboard into the world of fame and fortune. And today, we’re looking at 10 of favourite former child West End stars who have gone on to big things.

How many have you seen on stage?

Kerry Ingram

In 2012, Kerry Ingram became one of the youngest recipients of the Olivier Award for Best Actress In A Musical alongside her other Matilda The Musical co-stars. Since starring in both the Stratford-upon-Avon and West End productions, Kerry has had roles in both TV and film. And without realising, you’ve probably shed a tear or two over her as she is most famous for her portrayal of Shireen Baratheon in Game Of Thrones.

Eleanor Worthington Cox

Along with Kerry, Eleanor Worthington Cox picked up the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actress In A Musical officially making her the youngest person to receive one of the prestigious awards as she was just 10 at the time. After her stint in the Tim Minchin musical, Eleanor landed a role as Young Aurora in Disney’s Maleficent before taking more roles on the stage. In 2016 Eleanor was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for her role in the TV mini-series The Enfield Haunting, and this year, she starred in Britannia.

Luke Youngblood

Luke Youngblood was the first young actor to play the role of young Simba in Disney’s The Lion King on the West End. Since he shed his worries, eagerly anticipated to be king and completed the circle of life, he’s been popping up everywhere. In the UK, he’s probably best known for playing Ben Batambuze in The Story Of Tracy Beaker and Lee Jordan in the Harry Potter series. But for those who like cult American sitcoms, you’ll recognise him as Magnitude from Community. Pop! Pop!

Dominique Moore

Dominique Moore starred alongside Luke when she played young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King. Despite being diagnosed with and beating cancer, she’s had a busy career on screen and stage. Amongst many other roles, she’s appeared in CBBC shows including The Crust, UGetMe, Stupid!, Hotel Trubble and The Queen’s Nose. She’s also been a regular in Horrible Histories and will be appearing in the movie next year.

Carrie Hope Fletcher

This West End diva needs very little introduction. The current star of Heathers The Musical started her career as Young Eponine in Les Misérables. Since then, she’s gone on to star as grown-up Eponine, Wednesday in The Addams Family, and Beth in War Of The Worlds. She’s also released two singles, written three books, and has a YouTube channel with over 600,000 subscribers.

You may know him as Tom from McFly, but Tom Fletcher – brother of Carrie Hope Fletcher – started his rise to fame on the London stage. Before singing about girls with five colours in their hair, he sang about food and picking pockets as he starred in Oliver! in the title role during its run at the London Palladium in 1995.

Kieran Alleyne

Through open auditions, Kieran Alleyne was cast as young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live. The 13-year-old had had no formal training and no prior experience on stage but his natural talent kickstarted his career. Since stepping into the limelight, he has become a household name having appeared on The X Factor in the boyband 5 After Midnight who came third in the competition in 2016. Earlier this year, Kieran left the band to go solo but instead found his place back in Thriller Live.

Layton Williams

Back in 2007, Layton Williams made his debut in Billy Elliot The Musical. He attended the Billy Elliot academy and his training was documented by the Paul O’Grady show. He went on to play Michael Jackson in Thriller Live but decided that the role wasn’t quite for him. Instead, he took the role of Kylie in BBC2’s Beautiful People and eventually went on to star in Bad Education. He’s now returned to the stage and has appeared in the UK tour of Rent and Hairspray.

Dean-Charles Chapman

Like Layton, Dean-Charles Chapman started his career in Billy Elliot. Unlike Layton, he didn’t start out as Billy. He first played two supporting characters before taking on the lead role. He was also the second-longest serving cast member and the longest-running Billy. After his six-year run in the West End show, Dean-Charles went on to star in TV and film. His most notable character is probably Tommen Baratheon in Game Of Thrones.

Tom Holland

Now one of the most recognisable faces in the world, Tom Holland started his career on the West End stage as Billy Elliot. He quickly went on to perform on screen with notable roles in Wolf Hall and The Impossible. He’s currently playing Spider-Man and will star in the upcoming screen adaptation of Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking series alongside Daisy Ridley.

Bonus: Christian Bale

Batman – AKA Christian Bale – has long been in the public eye. In fact, he’s been consistently appearing in films since 1987. And though people believe his role in Empire Of The Sun was his first role, they’d be mistaken. He actually appeared in another film, Mio In The Land Of Faraway, and he was in a West End show in 1984! He starred alongside Rowen Atkinson in The Nerd when he was just 10-years-old.

There are loads of talented young children on the West End stage right now. Fancy seeing them before they’re famous? There’s only one way to do it… go and see a show!

First pics of Peter Andre in Thriller Live’s 4000th spectacular show https://officiallondontheatre.com/news/first-pics-thriller-lives-spectacular-4000th-show/ Thu, 13 Sep 2018 11:35:04 +0000 http://&p=111413764 There are few artists whose songs generate quite the same buzz as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Translate that kind of sound into a West End musical, and you’ll have one of the most electrifying longest-running shows in the capital. Case in point: Thriller Live, which played a stunning 4000th London performance last night, starring Peter Andre for one night only.

Alongside fellow guest stars Russell Kane, Jon Culshaw and Kieran Alleyne – who won the coveted role of young MJ way back in 2008, and now plays the adult role – Andre led a spectacular celebration of the production’s landmark achievement. And even better: it was all in aid of The Prince’s Trust, the charity which helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track.

The gala night also heralded a year-long partnership between the show and the charity, which will include a commitment to provide tickets, workshops and a mentoring programme.

It wasn’t Andre’s first time taking on the hits of Michael Jackson; he’d previously performed Man In The Mirror on Children In Need in 2010.

You can enjoy a selection of images of Andre’s show-stopping performance, as well as the poignant moment that Alleyne played Michael Jackson alongside the current youthful counterpart, below (all snapped by Betty Zapata).

About joining the cast for this special performance, Peter Andre said: “Michael Jackson was musically the biggest influence in my life and career. He made me dream of being on stage and to be part of music. I am thrilled to join the cast of Thriller Live for this special night to raise money for The Prince’s Trust.”

Among the famous faces is Kieran Alleyne who won the coveted role of the young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live when he was 13 in 2018. He will be returning to the show as the lead MJ singer and dancer. Last year he was one third of the group 3AM who reached the finals of The X Factor.

Thriller Live is an all-singing, all-dancing tribute to Michael Jackson’s legendary career which spanned 45 years. It features more than two hours of hit songs including I Want You Back, I’ll Be There, Show You The Way To Go, Can You Feel It, Rock With You, She’s Out Of My Life, Thriller, Beat It, Ben, ABC, Man In The Mirror, Dirty Diana, Billie Jean, Earth Song, and many more.
