The London production of Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace Theatre has set new records as it extends past any other show in the West End ¬†as it is now taking booking up until 21 December 2013. With ticket sales continuing to grow throughout the difficult summer months, the show’s success has helped propel it into the future. Although the Broadway production of the show closed last year, the original West End show, which was described by many critics upon opening as one of the best British musicals since Oliver!, continues to draw in new audiences from around the world.

The show originally opened in London in 2006, and has been one of the West End’s favourite shows ever since. The combination of Lee Hall’s moving book along with Elton John’s magnificent music and lyrics, brought together by Stephen Daldrey’s direction creates a recipe for success, that currently shows no signs of slowing down.

The current London cast includes some members of the original company who were with the show when it first opened. Ann Emery who created the role of Grandmother has returned to the production and continues to delight audiences with her humorous and honest portrayal. Michael Peavoy shines as Tony after joining the company straight from the National Theatre’s recent production of Hamlet. The role of Billy is currently shared by Harris Beatie, Ryan Collinson, Harrison Dowzell, Adam Vesperman and Kaine Ward who each bring a unique touch to the challenging role.

The American production won 10 Tony Awards in 2009 including the coveted Best Musical. The first ever US national tour continues until Summer 2013, taking in cities such as Boston, Buffalo and Kansas City.

Performances continue throughout the busy 2012 summer, although some long running musicals will be taking a break throughout the Olympics. There is no doubt that Billy will continue to delight tourists and Londoners alike time and again and prove successful into its 7th year at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
